Juneteenth Proclamation
Arlington County commemorated Juneteenth earlier this week, celebrating with music, dancing, guest speakers and more. Watch the Reclaiming the past, Remembering Black Voices, Reshaping the Future event below.
The County Board also officially proclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in Arlington, and urged all residents and employees to join in the observance of this significant day.
Arlington County Government offices and services are operating on modified schedules in observance of the Juneteenth holiday on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
History's Eye on Arlington
Fire Station 8 in Arlington has a rich history as the first all-Black, volunteer fire department in the area, established in 1918. Known as the Halls Hill Volunteer Fire Department, it served the Hall's Hill community during a time of segregation. The station transitioned to a paid, all-Black fire company in 1951, and for decades, it was the only Arlington station staffed by Black firefighters.
The station has since become an important community institution and a symbol of resilience and perseverance. The establishment of the Hall's Hill Fire Station 8 was a landmark moment for the community and the country. Learn more in the video below.
