AVAST

Arlington Visual Art Studio Tour

Sept 20-21 | 11a-5p | various locations

59 Arlington art studios open their doors to the public for the 7th annual AVAST event, a joint effort of independent artists and volunteers. Featuring genres ranging from printmaking, jewelry, painting, weaving and fiber, and calligraphy, the self-guided tour allows participants to create their own itinerary to meet the artists in their maker spaces and see their work. Saturday, September 21 will feature studios in southeast Arlington, and Sunday, September 22 will feature studios in northwest Arlington. View the artist directory and the interactive map of the open studios.

Printed tour guides are available at art galleries, libraries, and sponsors locations (including Gallery 3700). They will also be available at each studio on the weekend of the tour. This self-guided tour is free and open to all who appreciate art! Join on Friday, September 20 from 5 to 7pm for a launch party at MoCA Arlington Innovation Studio and Store! More

Match and toss bean bags with images of cotton swabs, dental floss, cat litter, human waste, toilet paper, cigarette butts, “flushable” wipes, etc. with the proper disposal vessel: sink, toilet, trash can or the food scraps collection bin. This colorful carnival game built specifically for Arlington by artist Scott Pennington is designed to accommodate two to three players at a time making it fun for friends and family! Learn how household waste impacts the County’s wastewater collection and treatment systems and how you can help. Let it FLOW! runs through October 26. More

Moving Stories

Jane Franklin Dance: Moving Stories

Sept 26-27 | 7p | Lloyd House Gardens | Alexandria, VA

Moving Stories is a movement-based work that is about historical Lloyd House and its Gardens, not as a static landmark, but rather as a place where people of different generations interact. The performance resonates with the landscape and references the site's history. For this performance, movement interacts with a sound score layered with statements about the landmark’s history and its current role in Alexandria. People of all ages may participate in a pre-performance workshop at 6:30pm. More

Persistent Vision: Punk in DC

What's more punk than reading freely? In celebration of Free to Read Week, learn about another movement that fought for equal space for suppressed voices. Ben Jackson, co-curator of the Persistent Vision online exhibition at the University of Maryland, will use the digitized collection of DC punk memorabilia to tell the story of a subculture and community that used music as a tool to affect change. More
