Crystal City Metro Second Entrance Public Meeting

Arlington County transportation staff will host a virtual Project Design Update meeting for the Crystal City Metrorail Station East Entrance project on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 7 pm.

Staff and representatives from the project’s design team will share the 30% plan for the updated design, which features an at-grade (ground-level) ticketing mezzanine, answer questions, and solicit input on some of the design details to be used in the new approach.

Project Background

In March 2022, the County Board approved an Amendment to the Interim Agreement with

JBG SMITH, the private partner on this Public Private Partnership, to advance the design of an alternative for the new station entrance that features an at-grade (ground-level) ticketing mezzanine. The previously designed underground mezzanine significantly exceeded the County’s project budget, and this alternative offers cost savings over the current design by significantly reducing the amount of excavation required, reducing the number of elevators from five to three, and removing the need to penetrate the station’s existing vault wall.

Both the previous underground entrance design concept and the new at-grade alternative achieve the goals of adding capacity to meet future growth, creating a multimodal transportation hub, and improving access and accessibility to the Crystal City Metrorail Station from Crystal Drive. The at-grade alternative will locate the main station components (such as faregates) at the surface with the primary access from Crystal Drive. The County has coordinated these proposed changes with WMATA.

Join the project team and learn more about the design and the project’s timeline on September 6.

Help Finalize the 23rd Street South Section of the Crystal City Bike Network

Earlier this summer, the project team for the Crystal City Bike Network shared the final network plan and updated you on how each segment will be delivered. Now, you can provide your input on one of the key east-west connections for the CCBN.

The Arlington County Planning Commission’s Site Plan Review Committee (SPRC) is considering a proposal from JBG Smith to reconstruct 23rd Street South between Route 1 and Crystal Drive as part of the 2250 Crystal Drive/223 23rd Street South – Plaza 5 project. Using input from the Crystal City Sector Plan and the CCBN plan, the developer has shared a proposed design for the block that is in line with the cross-section put forth in the CCBN plan.

You can review their proposed design and share your feedback on the concept through the SPRC’s public engagement process for the proposed development. The next meeting for this Site Plan process is on September 15, 2022 with Transportation and Streetscape as one of the topics to be discussed. More information and links to the plans and meeting are available on the Site Plan project page here.
