Desegregation of Arlington Lunch Counters

A Tribute to the Desegregation of Arlington Lunch Counters

by Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.

thru June 23 | various locations

In June of 1960, a group of students and community members held sit-ins at lunch counters across Arlington, Virginia. These sit-ins were protests to challenge widespread segregation policies. They led to the desegregation of lunch counters across Arlington, VA, just 13 days later. Arlington Arts visiting artist Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. has made seven letterpressed cards to honor the anniversary of the protests. Follow us on InstagramFacebook, or Twitter to see the sit-ins unfold on social media 61 years to the day. Plus, check out NBC4 Washington for a feature on our project!

Visit one or more of these original sit-in locations locations to gather your own collection cards while considering this part of the County’s history. Each location will feature a different card. More

Busboys and Poets Books Presents "In the Heights" with Lin-Manuel Miranda

Tues, June 15 | 8pm | online

Before Hamilton became a global phenomenon, before Lin-Manuel Miranda became a household name, a little show called In the Heights shook up Broadway with its hip-hop and salsa soundtrack and big, bilingual heart. In the new book In the Heights: Finding Home, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Quiara Alegría Hudes, and Jeremy McCarter tell the story of the show’s humble beginnings, from rehearsals in a bookstore basement to the Broadway smash (and soon-to-be feature film!) that created an unbreakable community and a new kind of family for everyone involved.
