The Tempest

Shakespeare’s classic comedy—the only play he set in the New World—is filled with young love, dazzling magic, cross-cultural strife, and ultimately forgiveness. In Avant Bard’s offbeat update, The Tempest tells a story of refugees and exiles that asks, “How can we all get along on this island Earth?” More

SigWorks: Fortune Cookies for Easy Women Smoking Loose Cigarettes by Dani Stoller

Marian Amsel assumed that retirement would be a quiet life with her new husband Richard in their Southern Florida gated community. However, a surprise visit from her grown daughter Lee, who has been kicked out of her own home by her husband, a guest room being used by Richard’s pregnant teenage niece, Kitty, and some extra attention needed by Bobby, the boy next door with the absentee father, suicidal sister, and mental hospital bound mother, leaves Marian with an empty nest a little fuller than she’d imagined.

Fortune Cookies for Easy Women Smoking Loose Cigarettes is presented as part of SigWorks: Monday Night New Play Readings at Ali’s Bar, a new initiative which highlights and supports the work of DMV and regional playwrights. This series is an opportunity for playwrights, actors, directors, designers, and patrons to explore new plays in a fun and informal environment. More
