Arlington Reads 2018

Arlington Reads brings people together to talk about books and the important topics of our time.

Habitats for Inhumanity

Our 2018 Arlington Reads series features an investigative journalist, a Princeton sociologist turned urban ethnographer and a leading authority on housing policy — each telling stories of people’s hopes, dreams and losses in the imminent face of eviction, segregation and inhumane living conditions.

Katherine Boo Arlington Reads

April's Featured Arlington Reads Event:

Wednesday, April 18 at Central Library.

Investigative journalist Katherine Boo, author of “Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity,” describes Annawadi, a slum of Mumbai, India, where she follows the interconnected lives of several residents, including a young trash picker, a female slumlord and a college student. All three face daily struggles ranging from corruption, hunger, disease, dirt, ethnic strife and violence while striving toward a better life.

Women's Work: A New Online Exhibit from the Center for Local History

Women standing on the porch of the Cherrydlae Branch Library in 1961

Do You Know Their Stories?

Real estate entrepreneur Margarite Syphax... Science educator Dr. Phoebe Hall Knipling... Political activist Gertrude Crocker...

In March, the Center for Local History unveiled a new exhibit: Women's Work: Stories of Persistence and Influence.

Many of these women were unknown and their work hidden from the public but nonetheless became groundbreakers, trailblazers and important forces locally and nationally dedicating their life’s work for better education, civil rights, conservation, health care and community services.

Over the next year we will follow their journey as it is revealed through our archival collections and oral histories. We will focus on Arlington's early pioneers (c.1900-1975) because their stories and contributions are not well known and should be brought to light, acknowledged, and celebrated.

Because there are always more layers of history to find and examine, the Center for Local History continually seeks community donations and oral histories. You can contact them at 703-228-5966 or by email.
