Transitway Ribbon Cutting on Sunday, April 17

Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the completion of the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway – the Washington area’s first right-of-way dedicated to premium bus service.

The event program will include remarks by Arlington, Alexandria and WMATA officials; a ceremonial ribbon cutting and a bus tour of the completed Transitway. Visit our website for event details.

Transitway Opening: What You Need to Know

On April 17, the Arlington portion of the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway will open. With it comes changes to bus service and how we use our streets. Here's what bus riders, drivers and cyclists need to know:

New stations

On April 17, certain existing bus stops in Crystal City and Potomac Yard will close and new transit stations will open. This map shows which bus stops will close and where the new stations are located.

What to expect at the new stations:

  • Be aware of the curb height along the bus boarding area - it’s greater than a standard curb to provide near-level boarding with the bus.
  • Do not step onto or off the higher curb to cross the street - use crosswalks instead.
  • Stand back from the platform edge while waiting for the bus.
  • Receptacles for trash and recyclables are available. Help us keep the stations clean.
  • Bike racks are available at the stations. Racks also are installed on the front of Metroway buses so you can bring your bike with you.

New bus lanes

On Monday morning, April 18, the new rush hour bus lane through Crystal City will start operating. This lane, on northbound Crystal Drive and southbound Clark/Bell Street, will be reserved for buses on weekdays between 6 and 9 a.m. and 3:30 and 7 p.m.

During these times other vehicles may only enter the lane to make a right turn at the next corner or driveway. Illuminated signs above the lane and signage along the street will indicate when the bus-only restriction is in force.

More information is available on Understanding Transit Lanes and in our list of frequently asked questions.

Download the transit lanes flyer (in English and Spanish) and help us spread the word by posting it in your building and sharing it with your neighbors.

Construction Updates

ART Bus Facility

The contractor continues to demolish the existing curb and gutter along South Eads Street in preparation for new sidewalk and roadway features. Crews on site are pouring the building slab grade and working on underground utilities at the north lot.

Crystal City Multimodal Center

This week the contractor continued reconstructing the sidewalk areas and installing pavers on eastbound 18th Street. In preparation for opening the eastbound lanes, the contractor is placing asphalt and removing the existing concrete barriers from eastbound lanes of 18th Street.

Next week crews will continue to reconstruct the sidewalks and install pavers on both the east and westbound sides of 18th Street. Visit project page

Detours/Lane Closures

The following lane closures are due to project construction:

18th Street South

  • Outside lanes on each side of the street are closed between South Eads and Bell Streets. No on-street parking or charter bus parking available in this area.
  • South sidewalk (adjacent to eastbound traffic) is closed. Pedestrians should use the north sidewalk closest to the Metro station escalator.
  • Bike lane closed under Route 1 bridge. Cyclists should use caution when riding on 18th Street.

South Eads Street

  • From 31st Street to Glebe Road, the sidewalk and bike lane along the east side are temporarily closed.
