Frequently Asked Questions: Transit Lanes

This week's question about the new bus-only lanes in Crystal City and Potomac Yard, opening this spring: Can cyclists use the bus lanes?

  • Cyclists are allowed to use the bus lane where sharrows are marked on the pavement and the signage indicates “Bicycles OK,” but they may not use the bus lane where a dedicated bike lane exists.
  • There is a bike lane adjacent to the bus lane on southbound Clark Street between 20th and 26th Streets and on northbound Crystal Drive between 23rd and 15th Streets.
  • Cyclists are not allowed in the exclusive bus lanes in Potomac Yard, which are dedicated to buses 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. Instead, riders should use the side path next to the bus-only lanes, or use the bike lanes on Potomac Avenue.

Construction Updates

ART Bus Facility

Crews continue to bring the site and building footprint up to grade, and utility work continues in preparation for pouring the concrete slab.

The remaining roadway improvements along South Eads Street, including utility, sidewalk, curb and gutter replacement, will begin next Friday, March 25. This will require temporarily removing part of the bike lane. The sidewalk along the east side of South Eads Street from Glebe Road to Fort Scott Drive also will be closed for approximately four to six weeks until the utility work is completed. Crystal City Multimodal Center

This week crews continued reconstructing the sidewalk area on eastbound 18th Street, and began installing pavers adjacent to the sidewalk construction. They also began installation of curb and gutter and storm drain items on the eastbound side of the street.

Next week the contractor will continue to reconstruct the sidewalks, relocate storm drain items, install pavers and begin construction of tree pits. Visit project page

Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway

Construction activities for Saturday, March 19 through Friday, March 25 are described in this week's construction update. Note that crews are scheduled to work on Saturday, March 19. There also will be ongoing testing and adjustments of the lights on the Transitway stations.

Temporary lane closures will be installed as necessary to protect the traveling public and work crews. For construction-related issues, call 703-638-0165. Visit project page

Detours/Lane Closures

The following lane closures are due to project construction:

18th Street South

  • Outside lanes on each side of the street are closed between South Eads and Bell Streets. No on-street parking or charter bus parking available in this area.
  • South sidewalk (adjacent to eastbound traffic) is closed. Pedestrians should use the north sidewalk closest to the Metro station escalator.
  • Bike lane closed under Route 1 bridge. Cyclists should use caution when riding on 18th Street.
