Each year, this sold-out event brings together over 400 golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters for a day on the course, followed by an evening of connection, stories, and impact. From the first tee shot to the final paddle raise, every moment is rooted in one shared purpose: showing our veterans and first responders that they are not alone.
Proceeds directly support the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation, founded by Leslie Mayne in memory of her son, U.S. Army PFC Kyle Farr. Since 2010, the Foundation has been helping veterans, first responders, and active-duty service members not just survive trauma, but learn how to move forward with strength, purpose, and support.

The PGA of America is one of the world's largest sports organizations, composed of PGA Professionals who work daily to grow interest and participation in the game of golf. All programs are funded by PGA REACH and supplemented by PGA Section Foundations, so the cost of programming is free to all Veterans.
On Friday, May 2, 2025, the Pacific Northwest PGA HOPE program hosted its inaugural “We Got Your 6” Fundraising Scramble at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma, Washington. Sponsored by Humana and Freedom Financial, the event brought together the golf community to support local Veterans through the power of the game.
The tournament featured 16 teams and a total of 63 golfers. Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of participants and sponsors, the event raised $11,400 to benefit PGA HOPE clinics throughout the Pacific Northwest Section.
One of the most powerful moments of the day came from PGA HOPE Ambassador Jeanie Butler, who played alongside Veteran Kevin Wilson. Due to injuries sustained during his service in Iraq, Kevin lost his sight—but through strength, perseverance, and the support of his coach and guide dog, he continues to play golf.
“I had the honor of golfing with a fellow veteran who sacrificed so much more than I did for this country,” said Jeanie. “With his coach and guide dog by his side, he crushed it on the fairways and made some beautiful putts. He’s such an inspiration and exactly what PGA HOPE is about.”
PGA HOPE Ambassador Jeff Bojanowski also shared emotional remarks during the event.
“I never would have imagined the support the community has for the military community until I got involved with PGA HOPE,” he said. “Seeing all of you here brings a tear to my eye and fills my heart with joy.”
Congratulations to the winning team of Joel Skarbo, Tony Wilkins, Edward Lyon, and Jacob Clay!
The success of the event wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible generosity of our golf community. Thank you to all the golf facilities that donated rounds of golf for our auction, the PGA Professionals who contributed lessons, and our vendors for providing fantastic raffle items. 100% of these donations went directly to support future PGA HOPE programs. Your contributions truly help us make a difference in the lives of Veterans and Active-Duty Military, and we are deeply grateful for your continued support.
PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is a flagship military program of the PGA of America. It introduces golf to Veterans and Active-Duty Military personnel as a way to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. Led by PGA Professionals, the program features a 6–8-week instructional curriculum and is provided at no cost to participants.
Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Veterans Affairs, PGA HOPE receives direct referrals from VA medical centers, establishing golf as a recognized form of therapy and rehabilitation.

Alaska Folds of Honor Championship
The 2025 Alaska Folds of Honor Championship marked a milestone year, raising a record-setting $21,700 for Folds of Honor—the highest total in the event’s history. These funds help provide scholarships and educational support for the spouses and children of fallen and disabled military service members, honoring their sacrifice through opportunity.
The 2026 Alaska Folds of Honor Championship is scheduled for July 11, 2026 at Moose Run Golf Course, located at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in the Anchorage metropolitan area. Moose Run Golf Course is a 36-hole military golf facility open to the public. Moose Run Golf Facility consists of two courses, the Creek Course and the Hill Course. This is the only 36-hole facility in Alaska and one of the premier military golf operations in the world! The facility has earned several awards including:
#2 in Alaska, Golf Week’s “Best Courses You Can Play” – (2016, Creek Course)
#5 in Alaska, Golf Week’s “Best Courses You Can Play” – (2016, Hill Course)
#4 in Alaska, Golf Digest’s “Best in State” – (2015, Hill Course)
Moose Run Golf Course has been working in conjunction with the Alaska VA since 2018 to offer programs to our Alaskan veterans in need of their services. We HOPE to introduce golf to our local heroes and help to improve their quality of life through golf. We became a certified chapter of HOPE through the PGA in 2017.

The American Lake Veterans Golf Course, spanning 377 acres, was established in 1956 following World War II. The course was designed as a nine-hole place of respite on the VA hospital near Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Its mission is to offer essential rehabilitation and recreational opportunities for Veterans, many of whom suffer from severe disabilities. In 1995, funding for the operation and maintenance of all VA golf courses was discontinued. Nevertheless, this course continued to operate through a volunteer program. After falling into disrepair, the course faced potential abandonment. In 2014, Jack Nicklaus designed the new back nine holes and concurrently redesigned the existing front nine holes. Nicklaus’ work is the centerpiece of the $4.5 million project at American Lake called “A Course in Courage: Healing America’s Veterans through Golf.”
The renovated front nine reopened in 2022, making it an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course. With an unparalleled record of producing the most championship golf courses, Nicklaus Design is synonymous with world-class course design. The American Lake Veterans Golf Course offers rehabilitation, therapy, socialization and support to those who have given so much for our country. The American Lake Veterans Golf Course is recognized as the 400th Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. Notably, Jack Nicklaus is the first athlete and only the fourth individual ever to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal, and the Lincoln Medal.
VA's NW MIRECC serves to improve the mental health and well-being of Veterans through research and dissemination of information to providers both within VA and the general public. VHA continually evolves and cultivates ongoing cutting-edge medical research and innovation to improve the lives of America’s patriots. VA's Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 20 serves Alaska, Washington, Oregon, most of Idaho, and one county each in Montana and California. Operating across three time zones over 817,417 square miles, VISN 20 is home to 273 federally recognized American Indian and Alaskan Native tribes. Spanning 23% of US land mass, VISN 20 is the largest geographic region of VA. NW MIRECC brings together complementary research, education, and clinical programs from VA Puget Sound (VAPSHCS) and the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS). The collaborative approach to mental health research, education and treatment has had a profound impact on the lives of Veterans.
|
VAPSHCS and VAPORHCS were commissioned by Congress and the VA as one of the first three MIRECCs in the United States. The mission of NW MIRECC is to improve the quality of life and function of Veterans by developing, evaluating, and promoting the implementation of effective treatments for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its complex comorbidities. PTSD comorbidities include the behavioral consequences of repetitive blast mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), Substance Use Disorder (SUD), chronic pain (in particular, post-concussive headaches), cognitive impairment, and increased risk for neurodegenerative disorders (chronic traumatic encephalopathy [CTE] and Alzheimer’s disease [AD]). VA MIRECC's provide for the improvement of the provision of health-care services and related counseling services to eligible veterans suffering from mental illness (especially mental illness related to service-related conditions) through—
• the conduct of research (including research on improving mental health service facilities of the Department and on improving the delivery of mental health services by the Department);
• the education and training of health care personnel of the Department; and
• the development of improved models and systems for the furnishing of mental health services by the Department.
|
As part of the VISN 20 NW MIRECC mission to enhance access to mental health expertise, the NW MIRECC collaborates and consults with other MIRECCs and Centers of Excellence, as well as with other VA, Department of Defense (DoD), Federal, State departments of Veterans Affairs, community agencies, and experts. The close geographic proximity (40 miles) of DoD Joint Base Lewis-McChord/Madigan Army Medical Center to VAPSHCS has provided an exciting opportunity to develop innovative and productive research, education, and clinical care collaborations with DoD personnel that address PTSD and its associated conditions in their early stages in active-duty Servicemembers.
VA ranks as one of the nation's leaders in health research. Every year, thousands of research studies are conducted at VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes. For example, the VA has:
|
• Developed artificial limbs that allow amputees to have more independence and better quality of life
• Invented the cardiac pacemaker
• Performed the first successful liver transplantation
• Developed the nicotine patch to help people stop smoking
• Played a major role in the development of the CT/CAT scan to view the inside of the body
• Tested new drugs and treatments for diseases such as AIDS, Diabetes, Alzheimer's and Osteoporosis
NW MIRECC research studies significantly contribute to advancements in our understanding of medical problems that lead to health improvements for Veterans and civilians alike. Research studies at NW MIRECC are currently enrolling Military Veterans, First Responders, Health Care workers, and Civilians in Seattle, Washington.
