Archive Available of February’s FHEA Cyberseminar: Pursuing Health Equity for Veterans with a Dedicated National Program Office—Five Years in Review

The archive of February’s Focus on Health Equity and Action (FHEA) Cyberseminar is now available. The session reviewed VA efforts over the last 5 years to advance health equity for Veterans since the establishment of the VA Office of Health Equity (OHE).

OHE's staff, Drs. Uchenna S. Uchendu (Chief Officer) and Kenneth T. Jones (Program Analyst), discussed VA’s progress in implementing the agency’s strategic plan to advance health equity; OHE supported activities in advancing research, partnerships and tools; and future actions to ensure all Veterans have access and receive high quality, timely, and equitable care.

Virtual Health Equity Learning Hub for Veterans and Stakeholders Now Open

The VA Office of Health Equity (OHE) is pleased to announce the opening of the Health Equity Learning Hub in the VA Virtual Medical Center (VA-VMC).

The Health Equity Learning Hub was designed by OHE Chief Officer, Uchenna S. Uchendu, MD, and partners. The learning hub provides a persistent, online, virtual world where Veterans and stakeholders can meet, interact, and learn with others to discuss and understand health equity issues impacting Veterans.

The Health Equity Learning Hub in the VA-VMC was the topic for the September 2017 Focus on Health Equity and Action Cyberseminar. The archived recording of the session—Promoting Health Equity with the Virtual Medical Center—is available online. Additional links are provided below with more information about the Health Equity Learning Hub.

Join VA Office of Health Equity at Beyond Flexner 2018: Community, Diversity and Equity

The 2018 Beyond Flexner Conference will take place April 9-11 in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference is a comprehensive activity for health professions educators, students and residents, clinicians, and community partners committed to a more equitable health care.

Chief Health Equity Officer Dr. Uchenna S. Uchendu of the VA Office of Health Equity will deliver a presentation during the Tuesday, April 10th breakout session from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm (C07 Social Mission Interventions with Special Populations). The title of Dr. Uchendu's presentation is Pursuing Health Equity for America’s Heroes through VA’s Capabilities for a Social Mission.

Conference keynote speakers include Sir Michael Marmot, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London and Chair of the World Health Organization Commission on Social Determinants of Health. Sir Michael Marmot contributed an editorial—Social Determinants of Health Equityto the record-breaking 2014 Veteran Health Equity special supplement in the American Journal of Public Health sponsored by the VA Office of Health Equity. The Honorable Andrew Young, Civil Rights Leader, US Ambassador to the United Nations (Carter Administration), and Mayor of Atlanta (1982-1990) will also deliver a keynote.

Beyond Flexner provides a unique opportunity to learn more about the social movement and how to integrate social mission into your teaching, learning and practice. This year's conference is hosted by Morehouse School of Medicine, the Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and the Beyond Flexner Alliance. Continuing education credits are available.
