The VA healthcare system represents an equal access system. However, disparities still exist in key health indicators for vulnerable Veteran groups. Until now, a national report detailing the state of care and key outcome metrics for vulnerable Veteran patients in VHA care did not exist. The National Veteran Health Equity Report is designed to provide basic comparative information on the sociodemographics, utilization patterns and rates of diagnosed health conditions among groups over which the VHA Office of Health Equity has responsibility.

Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) have substantially poorer health outcomes compared to individuals without mental illness. The VA has expended considerable effort to improve and address gaps in care for this population.  This cyber seminar will focus on a retrospective cohort study using FY12 data to examine health disparities between SMI and non-SMI Veteran population and a recent report that reviews mental health inequalities and social determinants associated with poor mental health and examples of interventions to combat these inequalities.
