September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, and the last three years Atlanta VAHCS has sponsored a Suicide Prevention and Recovery Walk and Roll. Approximately 250 participants walked and rode their bikes around the Atlanta VA Clinic to promote awareness on Veterans suicide.
Dr. Tamara Campbell, the Executive Director of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, attended the event and noted that VA’s top clinical priority is preventing suicide among all Veterans.
“This walk highlights our focus on helping Veterans and their families get connected to mental health care at the VA and within the community,” Dr. Campbell said.
One retired Army Veteran noted it’s important to know what to do if you are experiencing a crisis and where to turn for help. “When we served in the military, we had to take care of our gear, take care of our troops. Now, we must take care of ourselves and reach out to the VA for help,” he said.
The Veteran added, “The Atlanta VA center has a wide range of mental health resources when you walk through the door, but you have to take that first step and walk through the door.”
Thank you for the entire AVAHCS team, our Veterans, caregivers, and family members who participated in the event. Your support is greatly appreciated.

September 30 through October 4, 2024, is national Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Vocational Rehabilitation Recognition Week. VHA provides vocational rehabilitation services to over 53,000 Veterans each year, including through its Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program. CWT services are recovery-oriented and focus on each Veteran’s strengths, skills, abilities, needs, goals, and preferences.
CWT services include building job skills and assisting Veterans in securing and maintaining meaningful employment regardless of the Veterans’ disability, diagnosis, symptoms, work history, legal background, or cognitive impairment.
Veterans are placed in work assignments or competitive employment within VA and the community through partnerships with employers.
The first step of the CWT process is attending orientation.
It is held every Thursday at Goodwill of North Georgia located at 2160 Metropolitan Parkway. Please note: orientation is held at Goodwill Decatur Career Center on the second Thursday of the month. The orientation begins at 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with walk-in registration at 9:30 a.m.
This informational session gives Veterans additional information about the different services CWT offers including:
- Transitional Work (TW)
- Supported Employment (SE)
- Transitional Housing (TR)
- Other vocational services
- Community placement and job referrals
- Job readiness
- Vocational services offered by a VA Vocational Specialist
