The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing the five winners of the Veterans Cardiac Health and AI Model Predictions (V-CHAMPS) Challenge. A team of data scientists and clinicians from the FDA, Veterans Health Administration , and National Institute of Standards and Technology dual-anonymously judged the entries to select the winners based on performance of model predictions when tested with real-world data.
The V-CHAMPS Challenge intends to encourage the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) models to predict heart failure related outcomes -- including hospitalization, readmission, and mortality. The models use artificially generated health records, for example, from real health record datasets with sensitive information replaced with phantom data to preserve patient privacy.
This challenge is a collaboration between the following agencies:
- FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health,
- FDA’s Digital Health Center of Excellence,
- FDA Office of Digital Transformation’s precisionFDA,
- UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
Dr. Amanda Lienau, Director of Open Innovation for VHA's Office of Healthcare Innovation and Learning, hosts the Data and Analytics Innovations COP (Community of Practice) call that is open to practitioners interested in connecting with each other and learning more about the data and analytics work within VHA as well as the growing industry. There is a wide-ranging attendance from directors to program analysts, and clinicians to researchers, with the ultimate goal of promoting Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning (AI/ML), and data and imaging exploration and collaboration within and around the healthcare and research sectors. If you have a question about how to advance AI/ML and data within VHA, the group would be happy to help!
The Data & Analytics COP call is held on the fourth Friday of each month and runs for 45 minutes. Click here to join the Data & Analytics COP and click here to view the VHA OHIL Data Analytics Innovation SharePoint for more resources. To be a featured presenter on a future COP call or if you have any questions, please reach out to David.Winters2@va.gov.
DataX: Highlighting Data and Analytics in VA
Last summer, data experts, VA leaders, and frontline staff convened in Washington D.C at the International Summit of AI in Healthcare’s DataX session track. The DataX session track showcased some of the data and analytics work being done in VA and highlighted how this work is impacting clinical care for Veterans. “The primary mission for DataX really is connecting people to one another,” said Dr. Lienau. “There are a lot of very talented people working in this space, and there are a lot of opportunities to continue to improve the services and care that we provide to Veterans.”
The three-day session track consisted of 23 industry leaders divided among six panel discussions about how they can remove barriers, improve data policy, and enhance the information sharing process. Learn more about DataX in our recap here and in our DataX recap video.
