Veterans,
Happy New Year! As we close out the first week of 2024, we wanted to share a few updates with you.
Weather Preparedness
You may be aware a storm system is headed toward our are of operations and has the potential to hit with some very adverse weather conditions. As we continue to monitor the weather, we'll be sure to update our social media pages and website for any potential impacts to our daily operations. Please check www.va.gov/durham-health-care for official weather status updates from us.

Protect Yourself From Seasonal Flu and COVID-19
Viruses, like other enemies, change tactics over time. We strongly encourage our Veterans to get your updated 2023-2024 Flu and COVID vaccines to minimize the spread of flu and COVID, protecting both yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting both vaccines at the same time as this is safe and saves time.
There are three convenient ways for Veterans enrolled with VHA to receive their vaccines free of charge:
- Flu and COVID vaccines are available during normal operating hours at all Durham VA Primary Care Clinics
- You may get vaccinated during any scheduled VA medical appointment by asking your nurse
- Veterans may bring their Veteran ID card to an in-network retail pharmacy - find your nearest location here
Thanks for taking steps to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your fellow Veterans.
Don't Delay, Test Early
It's officially respiratory virus season; cases of influenza and COVID-19 continue to rise. If you have any of the following symptoms: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell, please get tested right away so we can offer treatment that lowers the risk of hospitalization and death from these viruses.
Treatment for influenza must be started within 48 hours of symptoms and treatment for COVID-19 must be started within five (5) days of when your symptoms begin. In 2024, patients can be charged for COVID-19 treatments, so prescriptions are now filled through the VA instead of being sent to your local pharmacies, ensuring they remain free of charge to all Veterans. Please contact your care team as soon as you develop symptoms to get tested and see if you are eligible for treatment.
It’s also not too late to get vaccinated to prevent severe illness from flu and COVID. Vaccines are available through Primary Care and Specialty clinics during normal business hours. Please get vaccinated today if you have not yet received both the 2023-2024 influenza and COVID vaccines.
Please stay safe and warm out there. And thank you for your service.
