Dear VA Maryland Health Care System E-News Subscribers:

Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that affects the lungs and breathing passages. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be dangerous for older adults. Each year, it is estimated that between 60,000 to 160,000 older adults in the United States are hospitalized due to RSV infection. Adults who are 60 years or older are at highest risk, especially those with:

  • Chronic heart or lung disease
  • Weakened immune systems
  • Certain other underlying medical conditions
  • And adults living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities

There are RSV vaccines that can help protect adults aged 60 years and older from RSV. We recommend talking to your VA primary care provider to see if vaccination is right for you.

The VA Maryland Health Care System is now offering the RSV vaccine. To schedule an in-person, phone or video appointment with your primary care provider to see if the vaccination is right for you, call the Appointment Center at 410-605-7333, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Thank you.
