Clinical Practice Guideline for PTSD 2023: Psychotherapy Recommendations

About the Presenter

JESSICA HAMBLEN, PhD, a clinical psychologist and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, is Deputy Director for Education at the National Center for PTSD. In this capacity she oversees the Center's educational efforts to promote the implementation of evidence-based care for Veterans and trauma survivors through provider training and support and increase awareness of PTSD and engagement in treatment. Dr. Hamblen is a member of the workgroup that developed the 2023 Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for PTSD.  Her professional interests are in developing, disseminating and evaluating cognitive behavioral treatments for PTSD and related conditions. She is a funded investigator who has conducted several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating these interventions. Currently she has an RCT focused on the evaluation of an online PTSD program to increase engagement and retention in PTSD treatment. She attended the State University of New York at Buffalo where she obtained her PhD in clinical psychology. She completed her pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Dartmouth and the National Center for PTSD.

About the Topic

A VA/DoD workgroup completed a revision of the Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for the Management of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Acute Stress Disorder in early 2023.  The guideline is based on a complete review of the traumatic stress research literature since the 2017 Guideline and provides recommendations for providers who treat Veterans.  Clinicians are unfamiliar with its recommendations and how they differ from the previous guideline.  In order to help clinicians become knowledgeable about the recommendations and to assist them in providing care based on the latest evidence, this webinar will review the process by which the guideline was developed, clearly explain the recommendations related to psychotherapy, and discuss the clinical implications for providers treating Veterans.

PTSD and End of Life: Clinical Considerations for PTSD in Palliative or Hospice Care

Patients receiving health care at end of life (EOL) may receive palliative and/or hospice care for their medical conditions. One task of end-of-life care is to help patients have a death that involves minimal pain and suffering, optimal emotional well-being, and quality of life as defined by the patient. For patients with pre-existing PTSD, some may have had chronic symptoms, and others may experience a flare of symptoms during EOL, either of which can complicate the dying process for patients and their loved ones. Although there has been very little research on PTSD specifically at EOL, clinical guidelines are emerging that may support clinicians and point to areas for future research.
