Library Service Recognizes American Heart Month

American Heart Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, but there are many things people can do to prevent it. For example, research shows that self-care can help keep blood pressure healthy and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Researchers define self-care as what you do to care for health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or mental health disorders – in other words, it’s heart-healthy living.

Self-care can include planning for:

  • Daily physical activity, such as a brisk, 30-minute walk.
  • Cooking meals that are low in sodium and unhealthy fats.
  • Taking medications as prescribed and keeping medical appointments.
  • Getting 7 – 8 hours of sleep per night.
  • Managing stress through meditation, yoga, warm baths, or quiet times with.
  • a good book or funny movie.
  • Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight.

For more information about heart disease or other medical topics, visit the VA North Texas Medical Library, Building 2, Room 3C-340. The Library is open Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4 pm., and 24/7 access is available with your registered PIV card. You can also email the Library at ntxlibrary@va.gov or call x71245 with your information requests.
