Flu Shots and COVID-19 Boosters
Veterans Health Administration sent this bulletin at 09/29/2022 08:34 AM EDTVeterans,
The Durham VA Health Care System is now offering flu shots and new updated bivalent COVID-19 boosters that are designed to provide better protection against the Omicron strains that are causing COVID-19 infections right now (BA.4 and BA.5). These new COVID-19 boosters are recommended for everyone age 12 and older as long as you have completed a primary vaccine series (Pfizer, Moderna, Janssen, or Novavax) and it has been at least two (2) months since your most recent dose, regardless of how many previous boosters you have received.
Staying up to date on recommended vaccines is important to prevent hospitalization from COVID-19 and influenza, especially for those age 50 and older and those with underlying health conditions. Even for young, healthy people, staying up to date on vaccines helps prevent infection, slows the spread to others, and could mean the difference between getting a mild cold and getting very sick. Mixing COVID-19 vaccine types is allowed for booster doses so you can get whichever bivalent booster is available at the VA closest to you, regardless of which vaccine you originally received.
