On March 16, the White House convened the Cancer Cabinet for the first time to establish a prioritized agenda for President Biden’s renewed Cancer Moonshot initiative. Secretary Denis McDonough represented VA at the historic meeting.
In a VA blog post shortly following the meeting, Secretary McDonough touted the establishment of the National Center for Lung Cancer Screening as one of the Department’s key achievements in treating cancer since 2016.
“With the help of the Center, VA is poised for rapid growth in enabling Veterans to access lung cancer screening and subsequently dramatically reduce the number who die from lung cancer,” McDonough wrote.

Guideline-Recommended Lung Cancer Screening Adherence is Superior with a Centralized Approach
Harrison B. Smith, MD; Ralph Ward, PhD; Cassie Frazier, DNP; Jonathan Angotti, MD; and Nichole T. Tanner, MD
“This study highlights the benefits of a centralized approach to lung cancer screening where the correct individuals are screened and a focus on returning each year is emphasized,” Dr. Tanner said. “The mortality benefit of lung cancer screening will not be recognized should eligible individuals not return for subsequent imaging. As the VA implements lung cancer screening more broadly, resources to support a centralized approach to lung cancer screening will result in high quality screening and the best outcomes for our Veterans.”

New Logo - The National Center for Lung Cancer Screening has adopted a new logo, seen on the right. All materials coming from the Center will have this logo to designate they have been written, reviewed, and approved by us. We are actively updating all our materials to include the latest information.
This logo will help build recognition for and promote lung cancer screening with Veterans, within the VA, and with key stakeholders both internally and externally.
