A Message from John A. Gennaro - Erie VAMC Medical Center Director
September 11, 2001, changed more than the skyline of New York City – the attacks forever changed a generation of Americans, our armed forces, and the world.
The destruction and the devastation – as profound as it was – did not break the soul of this great nation. It made us stronger, more resilient, and galvanized Americans with pride and patriotism. It invigorated a spirit of service in the hearts of many who responded selflessly to defend our homeland.
That day fundamentally changed our nation. Today, we observe Patriot Day each September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance for the thousands of lives lost in the 9/11 attacks.
We know this day is and always will be difficult – for it was no ordinary day. We remember and will never forget the nearly 3,000 lives taken. Further, we honor the courage of those who put themselves in harm’s way to save people they never knew.
Across our country this weekend, Americans will come together in service and remembrance. Please join me in a moment of silence as we honor those we lost 20 years ago.
Honoring the experiences of our Veterans impacted by September 11th is an essential part of healing and rebuilding. Over the past 20 years, VA has dedicated resources to ensuring Post-9/11 Veterans have the support services in place to meet their unique needs and goals.
I am thankful for our committed and caring staff who create compassionate, safe spaces for our Veterans to receive the exceptional care they deserve.
Looking back on the events of September 11, 2001, I am reminded of the spirit of resilience and service, the optimism, and the strength that defines us as a nation – no matter the trial or challenge.
As events in Afghanistan continue to unfold, we know these are not easy days. As a community, we reaffirm those who served post 9/11. We appreciate their selfless sacrifice, protection of our nation’s freedoms, and for keeping us safe over the past 20 years.
May we always remember those we lost. May we be grateful for those called to serve. May we be thankful for their collective sacrifice. May we have the determination to live lives worthy of their remembrance each day.
John A. Gennaro FACHE, MHSA, MBA Executive Director, VHA Erie VA Medical Center
Veterans who served in Afghanistan are watching recent developments in the region and are having trouble reconciling their service. This news can trigger a complicated wave of emotions. It is normal to feel this way.
Your service to our country matters.
We recognize this time of year can be difficult. We at the VA are proud of your sacrifice and your service.
We understand the news is hard to watch and at times hard to process. If you are a Veteran or know of a Veteran who is having a hard time, our Behavioral Health team is here to listen.
You are not alone.
When you are ready, call the Behavioral Health Clinic at 814-860-2038.
Big life moments - like transitioning from the military, starting a job, ending a relationship, or raising children - can be overwhelming, they don't have to go through them alone.
It remains more critical than ever to provide long-term support and resources that promote mental health care and wellness for our Post 9/11 Veterans – assisting in their recovery from tragedy.
The Erie VAMC Military2VA Case Management Program is here to assist.
What started as a VA Liaison Program in 2003, which served as a referral response team for seriously injured Post-9/11 Veterans expanded to serving any Post-9/11-era Veteran in need of case management and coordination.
Today, this program has transformed into a proactive, comprehensive, and integrative Post 9/11 Military2VA (M2VA) Case Management Program.
This team is uniquely designed to help Post-9/11 Veterans navigate the VA system while providing transition case management support based on their needs, aspirations, and civilian goals.
The mission remains the same – caring for Post-9/11 servicemembers and Veterans during transition and beyond – in times of war and in times of peace.
Today, VA is privileged to care for more than 1 million post-9/11 Veterans nationwide.
