Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System opened a COVID-19 screening clinic today at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, allowing Veterans who are being directly admitted to the hospital, or who require pre-procedure, or pre-operative COVID-19 testing to be swabbed inside in a more permanent setting.
Previously, COVID-19 swabbing was performed only via a drive-through tent in the hospital parking lot, or in the Emergency Department.
The clinic, located in room 1C-107 of the Little Rock VA, is also open to employees undergoing exposure tracing and who are asymptomatic. Veterans or employees who are symptomatic will continue to be swabbed in the Emergency Department. Testing will be scheduled at least 48 hours prior for planned procedures or surgeries.
The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Veterans can be scheduled into the clinic by their provider.
CAVHS is Phase 1 of a three-phase plan for recovery operations during the pandemic. Scheduling for non-urgent appointments began again on May 18 but for the protection of our Veterans and staff, and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are initially scheduling a minimum number of face-to-face visits.
The visitors by exception policy is still in effect and there are no changes to screening at this time.
Non-urgent procedures being offered include limited CTs, MRIs, ultrasounds and pain management, audiology appointments, limited primary care clinic appointments, general mental health clinic and PTSD clinics, and up to 12 operating room cases per day.
CAVHS was selected as the lead site for VA Recovery Operations in the South Central VHA Network – VISN 16.

CAVHS Mental Health RRTP residents are working with Mark Douglas, CTRS, BHS learning to and create their own masks, using sewing machines and masking supplies provided by our dedicated Voluntary Service Organizations through Mr. Michael Dobbs, Chief, Voluntary Service. |
Sewing machines were difficult to find and organizations including U.S.D. 1812, Soldiers Angels, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Daughters of the American Revolution, searched for the machines using online retail sources plus solicited used machines from members and neighbors. |
