Resume tips to prepare for a career with VA
Are you considering applying for employment with The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)? VA is committed to helping VET TEC graduates find meaningful employment.
Consider these best practices for preparing your resume.
Do: Tailor your resume to each application! Use your resume to tell each individual hiring manager why you’re a good fit.
Don’t: Copy and paste! Instead, use the information in the job announcement to introduce key themes and carefully employ specific keywords that match the announcement.
Do: Read the job description! A job announcement is much more than just a job title. Make sure you read all the details.
Don’t: Disqualify yourself! Make sure you fit the requirements in the job description, or your application won’t make it through. Is the position open to the public? Does it offer Veterans’ preference? Do you meet the education or certification requirements?
Do: Proofread! Take the time to polish your resume, word for word. If you turn in a resume with mistakes or errors in it, you can be sure hiring managers aren’t going to look at you too fondly.
Don’t: Hesitate to ask someone else to look at your resume! When you’ve read your resume over and over again, small mistakes may slip through. Have a friend read your resume to make sure you’re submitting the best version possible.

Important changes to Public Service Loan Forgiveness
This is a reminder that the waiver for the PSLF program will expire on October 31, 2022.
Oct. 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. Now, for a limited period of time, borrowers may receive credit for past payments made on loans that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF. Under the new rules, any prior payment made will count as a qualifying payment, regardless of loan type, repayment plan, or whether the payment was made in full or on time. All you need is qualifying employment.
The changes also include making it easier for members of the military to get credit toward forgiveness while they serve, even if the service member’s loans were on a deferment or forbearance rather than in active repayment. This change ensures that members of the military will not need to focus on their student loans while serving our country. More information can be found in this recent press release from ED. Information about PSLF program can be found here. For questions about PSLF, please reach out to the Department of Education or your loan service provider.

ATTENTION! Submit your Q4 hiring data: Employer Partners, please be sure to submit your employment hiring data for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2022 to the VET TEC EC team by October 10, 2022. Not only is this an important part of your responsibilities, but this information enables VA to share your VET TEC graduate hiring success stories with stakeholders to include our Congressional partners and emphasize your commitment to supporting the VET TEC program and Veteran hiring.
In addition to reporting the metrics, we hope that you will help us in telling the success stories of VET TEC graduates. We invite you to share with us the names and email addresses of the Veterans that you have hired for a possible future feature. We want to share their VET TEC success story and highlight your organization’s commitment to helping our Veterans find meaningful employment with the rest of the VET TEC community.
If you need a copy of the hiring tracker, please email VETTECPARTNER@va.gov to request one. If you would like for VA to contact someone else in your organization for the hiring data, please provide their contact information.
