Tips for resume development and acing your next interview
Did you miss our June Career Series? During the series, Maximus, an employer-partner of the VET TEC Employment Consortium, shared tips for resume development and mastering the behavioral interview process.
Determine the resume type that is the best fit to highlight your skills and experience:
-
A Chronological Resume lists your job in order, starting with the current or most recent position at the top.
-
A Functional Resume showcases skills over experience. The purpose of a functional resume is to draw attention to transferable abilities rather than focusing on a chronological overview of your work history.
-
A Combination Resume is designed for highly trained job seekers with previous work experience. This type of resume combines the most notable features of both the functional and chronological resume formats.
-
A Targeted Resume is written for a specific job opening, highlighting the skills and experience relevant to that position. Tailor your resume, using key words from the job posting description, each time you apply for a job.
Try the “STAR” method when responding to behavioral interview questions:
-
Situation: Provide context and background the situation you’re describing.
-
Task: Explain the task you had to complete, including problems and challenges you encountered along the way.
-
Action: Explain the specific steps you took to address the issue or solve the problem.
-
Result: Explain the actual outcome of the situation. Explain the impact you made, or lessons learned from this experience.
