Lakeysha Day, of North Carolina, was charged with one count of wire fraud in Kansas City, Missouri, for fraudulently obtaining a $20,000 Paycheck Protection Program loan under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. Day worked at the VA Medical Center in Columbia, Missouri, at the time of the offense, when she claimed to be a sole proprietor of a business with an average monthly payroll of $8,000. The supporting documents she submitted claimed gross receipts or sales of $114,210, business expenses of $14,685, and a profit of $99,525. However, Day’s 2019 personal income tax return did not report income and expenses claimed in the loan application. The VA OIG investigated this case.
