Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen to Travel to Virginia to Highlight How President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda is Increasing Access to Affordable, High-Speed Internet and Expanding Economic Opportunity in Rural America

WASHINGTON – On Monday, May 13, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen will travel to Stafford County, Virginia, to deliver remarks and tour a broadband infrastructure project funded by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan. President Biden has put forward a historic commitment to connect everyone in America to reliable, high-speed internet by the end of the decade. Doing so makes it easier for all Americans to connect to jobs, health care, and education – which in the process expands economic opportunity across the country for workers, small businesses, manufacturers, and more, particularly in rural and urban communities.

In 2022, Virginia received over $200 million in funding to expand high-quality broadband service to communities across the commonwealth through the American Rescue Plan’s Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund (CPF). This funding is in addition to the nearly $600 million in State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) being invested in broadband by the commonwealth and cities and counties throughout Virginia, and nearly $1.5 billion allocated to the commonwealth through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Secretary Yellen will visit a community in Stafford County that – thanks to CPF funding – has secured access to broadband service to nearly 700 homes and counting in rural Virginia.

While in Virginia, Secretary Yellen will meet with local officials and community members to discuss the impacts of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, including the benefits of bringing affordable, high-speed internet to all Americans. In her remarks, Secretary Yellen will highlight efforts to grow the economy while driving investment to rural – a central tenet of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda.
