U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen to Highlight American Rescue Plan Investments During Visit to Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota

 

The trip will mark the first visit by a Secretary of the Treasury to a Tribal nation

 

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday June 21, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen will travel to South Dakota where she will visit the Rosebud Indian Reservation. During her visit, Secretary Yellen will meet with Rosebud Sioux leaders and residents to discuss how American Rescue Plan funds are supporting the Tribe’s recovery from the pandemic and expanding economic opportunity for its citizens.

Recognizing the significant public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Tribal communities, the American Rescue Plan included over $30 billion for Tribal governments – the largest single one-time infusion of federal dollars into Indian Country to-date. Through the implementation of these funds, Treasury has deepened its relationship with Tribal governments and its understanding of the unique challenges they face. During Secretary Yellen’s visit she will meet with residents who received Emergency Rental Assistance funds that helped them remain in their homes, speak with Tribal leaders about their plans to use a portion of their State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to increase affordable housing supply, and the investments they’re making to boost educational and economic opportunities for all households by expanding access to high-speed affordable internet.

At 2:00PM, following a tour of American Rescue Plan funded projects and programs, Secretary Yellen and Rosebud Sioux Tribe President Scott Herman will make remarks at 3:45 pm. This event is open press and will be followed by a media availability.
