SBA Celebrates National Women’s Small Business Month in October with a Sweet Success

Valentine’s Day, 2012 was extra special for Jennifer Tremlett, who realized a lifelong dream of owning her own business.  She always knew she was meant to be an entrepreneur, but she couldn’t quite decide on what her passion really was.  One day, while she was researching the topic on the internet and eating candy, she realized that her destiny was to sell candy!  And what a better product to market - she believes candy is a recession-proof product.

Tremlett knew she needed help in finding a location, researching her market, and in obtaining financing.  She turned to the Macomb Small Business and Technology Development Center for help.  Don Morandini, Deputy Director for Macomb Planning and Economic Development helped her with her business plan and forecasting cash flow.  Together they created spreadsheets and validated the financial projections with market research.

Tremlett settled on a sight in Troy, MI but she needed financing to do the build out, purchase fixtures and inventory.  During a ten month process, she refined her business plan and overcame some significant individual challenges to secure a $75,000 SBA guaranteed loan from First State Bank.  “I’m very thankful for the assistance of the SBA and the SBTDC,” said Tremlett.

Getting used to owning a business, understanding that timing is everything and creating processes were the key challenges that Tremlett had to overcome.  Originally scheduled to open in June, she is thankful that she took the time to be prepared before the grand opening.

Tremlett wants to be known for customer service and to provide a “kid in a candy shop” experience for all who enter her store.  Her biggest reward is the smiling faces on her customers as they leave the shop.  Now every Valentine’s Day is an Anniversary Day for Jennifer Tremlett, thanks in part to the SBA.
