U.S. Small Business Administration Announces 2022 National Veterans Small Business Week Launching Oct. 31

Virtual and in-person events highlight the Agency’s efforts to support the nation’s nearly two million veteran-owned small businesses

Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the voice for America’s 33 million small businesses in President Biden’s Cabinet, announced that the SBA will celebrate National Veterans Small Business Week (NVSBW) Oct. 31 – Nov. 4, with a series of virtual and in-person events highlighting the entrepreneurial spirit and resilience of our veteran small business owners. Under the Biden-Harris Administration, increasing support for our service members, veterans, and their families has been a key priority. In October 2022, the SBA announced additional funding opportunities for community-based organizations to create targeted, impactful programming and expand access to SBA resources to support veteran entrepreneurs.

“Each year we celebrate National Veterans Small Business Week to honor America’s nearly two million veteran entrepreneurs who have answered our nation’s call to serve and protect us and are now making a difference every day for local communities and our nation’s economy,” said Administrator Guzman. “This week, and every week, the U.S. Small Business Administration is committed to doing its part to fulfill our responsibility to our veteran entrepreneurs by ensuring they can access the tools and resources they need to start, grow, and build resilient businesses.”

Throughout the week, SBA, resource partners, and local organizations across the country will focus on highlighting various aspects of the entrepreneurial journey for veteran small business owners and the agency’s support of this critical community in hybrid, in-person, and virtual formats. Topics include transition assistance, entrepreneurial training, government contracting, disaster assistance, and access to capital resources. Currently, there are over 100 virtual events that are free and open to the public. Visit for the full schedule.

According to the SBA South Dakota 2022 Small Business Profile, approximately 9,500 out of 90,000 small businesses – approximately ten percent – across the state are veteran-owned or co-owned by a veteran. “South Dakota veteran owned businesses numbers are in line with the national average that nearly one out of ten small businesses are owned by a veteran.” said Jaime Wood, SBA South Dakota District Director, a U.S. Army veteran. “The skills and experience service members and military spouses gain in their time serving within the military community are often a complementary fit for small business ownership.  Additionally, the veteran demographic is committed to community service and teamwork – just like when they were serving in the military – and self-employment through small business ownership provides the opportunity to continue contributing to a community they want to live, work, and thrive within including providing goods, service, and jobs for others.”

The SBA offers a large variety of small business programs and resources to assist all era veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard, Reservists, and military spouses in developing business skills for successful startup and growth. Wood recommends veterans connect with the SBA’s Veterans Business Outreach Center of the Dakotas for small business assistance and entrepreneurial training opportunities.
