SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program Helps Tribally-Owned Company Land $30M Contract

Are you a small, disadvantaged business owner interested in selling to the federal government?  Did you know SBA’s 8(a) Program could help you compete?

Minnesota-based MG Facility Services, a subsidiary of tribally-owned Makwa Global, was recently awarded a competitive 8(a) $30 million, multi-year contract, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, through their winning proposal and participation in the SBA’s 8(a) Program.

The 8(a) Program is a business development program for small business owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.

“For over 43 years the SBA 8(a) program has provided tremendous opportunity for socially disadvantaged individuals to develop their companies within the federal procurement system.  Many years later Tribally owned Businesses were granted eligibility to the 8(a) program,” explained Makwa Global’s CEO, Derek Dorr.

“Knowing the Mille Lacs Band, a business savvy tribe, has a thoughtful growth strategy to diversify its business interests, I knew the SBA 8(a) program was a great opportunity for this agenda.  We have since created a number of 8(a) companies and have secured a number of contracts for the tribe with this intent in mind.”

Disadvantaged businesses in the 8(a) program can:

  • Compete for set-aside and sole-source contractsin the program
  • Get a Business Opportunity Specialist to help navigate federal contracting
  • Form joint ventures with established businesses through the SBA's Mentor-Protégé Program
  • Receive management and technical assistance, including business training, counseling, marketing assistance, and high-level executive development
