April is Financial Literacy Month, and the SBA realizes that understanding your finances is key to running a business, and we are here to help! We are dedicated to helping entrepreneurs secure a stable financial future by providing counseling and training from our resource partners and SBA's Learning Center. Our online learning center has various courses at no cost to you on financing your business, accounting, pricing, and so much more.

Business Opportunity Specialist Don Owens will provide information on SBA programs and how to locate procurement opportunities. In addition, the federal government's goal is to award at least three to five percent of all federal contracting dollars to small and disadvantaged businesses each year.  To help provide a level playing field for small businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged people or entities, the government limits competition for certain contracts to businesses that participate in the 8(a) Business Development Program, as well as the Woman-Owned, Service Disabled, Veteran-Owned, and Historically Underutilized Business Zone small business concerns.  These programs enable small and economically disadvantaged firms to gain traction in the federal market space with support from the SBA.

Simplifying QuickBooks

QuickBooks is presented as a tool for storing transaction data for your business. In this basic introduction, you will see how the user interface works. The different versions of QuickBooks will be compared, so you can make the choice that best meets your needs. You will be prepared for free, one-on-one sessions with a SCORE mentor to help your set up your company in QuickBooks, begin the data entry process, and generate your financial reports. Supporting the presentation are several short video tutorials using the online version of Quickbooks. There is time allowed for discussion and answering questions.  This is not a hands-on workshop, so a computer is not needed. At  individual mentoring sessions after the workshop, we will help you to set up your business in QuickBooks with an appropriate chart of accounts and with an understanding of how to do data entry.

Boots to Business (B2B) is an entrepreneurial education and training program offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as part of the Department of Defense Transition Assistance Program (TAP).  Active Duty Service members (including National Guard and Reserve), Veterans of all eras, and spouses are eligible to participate.

The “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” course is the foundational piece of Boots to Business (B2B). Participants are introduced to the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to launch a business, including steps for developing business concepts, how to develop a business plan, and information on SBA resources available to help.

After completing the “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” course, participants can elect to further their study through one of many B2B online courses, delivered through partnerships with the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University and Mississippi State University (MSU). Online Follow-on courses are offered at no cost to Service members, Veterans and military spouses.
