SBA Honors Nation's Top Small Businesses

Charissa Rubey, 2020 North Dakota Small Business Person of the Year

Charissa Rubey (pictured left), CEO of Dakota Micro, Inc. will be among the top small businesses honored during National Small Business Week. The opening ceremony and presentation of the National Small Business Week Award Winners will occur in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. During the ceremonies, the SBA will announce the 2020 National Small Business Person of the Year from among the individual winners represented from across the U.S. and territories.

Dakota Micro, Inc. is a family-owned and operated business started by Charissa Rubey and her husband, Dave Rubey. The company manufactures ruggedized camera systems and surveillance equipment for agricultural, public works and military applications.

Dakota Micro camera equipment

Originally from southern California, Charissa moved to North Dakota with her husband Dave to take over his family farm. When a slipped disk in his neck forced Dave to wear a neck brace, it was nearly impossible for him to operate farm equipment without the ability to turn his head. They searched for a system that was small, durable and flexible enough to allow him to efficiently operate farm equipment. Finding none, Dave decided to develop and build one himself.

They formed Dakota Micro in 2002 on a shoe-string budget and began selling the camera system to a few dealers in the tri-state region. The company grew steadily and Dave developed additional camera systems. Charissa accessed SBA resources – SCORE Mentors, an SBA loan, the Women’s Business Center, and the U.S. Export Assistance Center – to start, grow, and expand the business. Today the company, still located on the family farm, has grown to include a 10,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that serves a global market with more than 40 dealers on five continents.
