SBA Indiana encourages Small Business Saturday with #ShopSmall walking tour of Indiana towns

Small Business Saturday, November thirtieth. Cosponsorship Authorization #19-2050-93.

In between the holiday shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday falls a very important day for entrepreneurs--Small Business Saturday.  In honor of this great day, the SBA Indiana District Office and small business partners from state and local organizations hit the streets for their annual Small Business Saturday #ShopSmall Walking Tours.  Stops this year included Madison, Jasper, and New Albany.

In Madison, a sense of welcoming was important for both visitors and shop owners.  "Madison is incredibly inclusive," said president of the LGBTQ group the Rainbow River Social Club Larry Ricci.  "We are so glad to be here and love how local small business fight to host our Rainbow River Social Club meetings."

Old Tyme Marketplace owner Beth Lewis agrees with that sentiment, and is one of several shop owners on Main Street that have moved their businesses from other locations just to have a space in the growing community.  In her case, she moved her store to Madison all the way from North Carolina.

"Something I've learned as a business owner is that if you give them the experience, you give them the customer service, they (the consumer) will give you the business," Lewis said.  "It's the same with a city--Madison will give you the experience, they will treat you right, and you'll want to be here.  It's a great sense of community and I'm glad we're a part of it."

U.S. Senator Mike Braun (IN-R) joined the team for a walking tour of Jasper.  Most small businesses on Jasper Town Square have been in business (and in the same spot) for at least five years, others, for generations.

"I'm here because we've been here since 1920," said Jim Siebert, current owner of the clothing store Siebert's.  He and other store owners on the square agree that there is a threat from big box stores but that the key to success is building community, a place where people want to be.

"We have to build the experience," said fellow Town Square shop owner Ann Knies of Chocolate Bliss & Kitchen Essentials.  "Jasper is for the recreational shopper who is looking for someplace fun to go instead of ordering online."

In New Albany, small business expansion and economic growth/revitalization work hand in hand. "Shopping small can literally change your life," said Jennny Watson, owner of  The Elderberry Company .

Watson started her business a few years ago on Facebook, and with the help of SBA resource partners at the Southeast Indiana SBDC, opened her first retail & production space in a renovated store front in downtown New Albany.

Ross Wallace, Him Gentleman's Boutique owner in New Albany

"This is what happens when you shop small," said Ross Wallace, owner of Him Gentleman's Boutique.  "Your support means we can help you change the face of your community."

That's exactly what Wallace is doing.

"Because of our experience in New Albany," he said, "we were able to open a shop in Louisville on Frankfort Ave. Now, we're back in New Albany  to expand even more and have purchased a building across the street from our original location."

"We're renovating the whole thing which we'll use for an expanded retail Him experience," Wallace said, "and my wife will be able to use part of the space to open a new salon."

This year marks the tenth Small Business Saturday, an annual celebration of America’s small business community. Last year on Small Business Saturday, Americans spent a combined $17.8 billion at independent neighborhood retailers and restaurants.  For more information about Small Business Saturday and where you can #ShopSmall, click below.
