SBA Houston Quietly Gives $177 Million to Local Start-Ups

Houston is successfully positioning itself as a world leader in technology and innovation. Notable recent developments to support this sector include the creation of “The Ion”, born from a public-private initiative to bolster Houston’s innovation economy, and The Cannon, a large, curated work-space community for innovative entrepreneurs. These accomplishments are among several that attracted Amazon’s newest tech hub, Silicon Valley’s Plug and Play accelerator and venture capital firm, and UiPath (one of the world’s largest artificial-intelligence startups).

How does the U.S. Small Business Administration fit in? One answer is through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, which are managed by the SBA.

A hidden gem within start-up funding, SBIR/STTR encourages U.S. small businesses to engage in research and development that is of special interest to Federal agencies and has significant potential for commercialization. Over the history of the program, which began in 1982, SBIR programs have granted over $47 billion to research-intensive American small businesses.

How To Prepare A Capability Statement And Market To Government Agencies

Sep 17: Federal Government Contracting

The Federal Government spends approximately $500B annually.  Add in State and Local Government spending and there is a good opportunity for you to sell your products and services to the government.  But it is a very competitive marketplace and you need to know how to market your business to set yourself apart from your competitors.

One of the most important tools you can use in your marketing effort is a Capability Statement.  It is a snapshot of your company – who you are, what you’ve done, and what you can do for your customers.  It is also known as your business resume.  It can open the door for further conversation with a potential customer and may lead to increased sales.

This workshop will introduce you to the types of Capability Statements and when each is used.  We will inform you on how to prepare a Capability Statement by explaining the information included in a well-prepared statement.
