Southern Tier Entrepreneur Takes Medical Transport Company To Next Level With SBA

Situation: When the Steuben County Infirmary where Rebecca Kilsdonk worked as a transportation and maintenance employee for 29-years was sold to a private entity, she found herself without a job. It was at that moment she knew her experience and heartfelt desire to provide an essential service to the community could be turned into her own business.

Less than a week later, she started CBR Transport LLC from her home in the rural village of Arkport, NY. After purchasing a handicap accessible van, Kilsdonk received 24 phone calls from interested clients the very first day in business. Along the way, she successfully navigated the complicated New York State regulations for medical transportation service companies, and continued to grow her business by adding more vehicles and drivers.

However, the demand for wheelchair medical transportation services continued to outpace CBR Transport’s capacity. Kilsdonk knew it was time to take her business to the next level and expand her fleet and location.

Solution: In the fall of 2017, Kilsdonk found the right financing for her business expansion with her long-time bank, Five Star Bank. Five Star Bank provided an SBA-backed loan to purchase two handicap accessible vans with hydraulic wheelchair lifts, as well as an SBA-backed line of credit for construction of a two-room office and larger parking lot for the company vehicles.

Outcome: CBR Transport LLC continues to grow and serve its customers today with a staff of 22 full and part-time employees and 16 vehicles. Their service area provides medical transportation clients with pick up service in Alleghany, Livingston and Steuben counties and transport to destinations in every county of New York State

Federal Government Achieves Small Business Contracting Goal for Sixth Consecutive Year with Record-Breaking $120 Billion to Small Businesses

Did you know that the federal government exceeded its small business federal contracting goal for the sixth consecutive year, awarding 25.05 percent in federal contract dollars to small businesses totaling $120.8 billion, an increase from the previous fiscal year of nearly $15 billion? 

More than 26 percent of federal contracts were awarded to Upstate New York small businesses, providing our small business community with critical procurement opportunities. This performance topped the national and regional averages and we are committed to ensuring that local small businesses will continue to have increased opportunities to compete for and win federal contracts," said SBA Syracuse District Director Bernard J. Paprocki. The SBA Syracuse District covers 34 counties across Upstate New York, including the Capital Region, Central New York, North Country and Southern Tier.

The Fiscal Year 2018 Small Business Federal Procurement Scorecard marks the first time more than $120 billion in prime contracts has been awarded to small businesses. Deadline Near for MaTCH Pilot Competition

In today's booming economy, our nation's employers are searching for qualified workers to fill the increasing amount of positions currently available. That's why the U.S. Small Business Administration has announced the Makerspace Training, Collaboration and Hiring (MaTCH) Pilot Competition which seeks to address the job skills and placement gaps faced by U.S. businesses. MaTCH will provide funding to create or expand programs with job-specific and soft skills training within existing makerspaces. The SBA will award up to $1 million in total prizes to fund selected winning proposals. The submission period began on May 21, 2019 and ends on July 8, 2019. Winners will be announced on August 6, 2019.

JULY 13 - Boots to Business Reboot Class in Utica

Join the SBA Syracuse District Office at Boots to Business Reboot, an overview of entrepreneurship provided for veterans of all eras, Active Duty Service members, and spouses. During Reboot, participants are introduced to the skills, knowledge and resources they need to launch a business, including steps for developing business concepts, how to develop a business plan, and information on SBA resources available to help. SBA and local Resource Partners will present at the training, including the Mohawl Valley Small Business Development Center, Utica SCORE Chapter, and the Women's Business Center of New York State. The free class will be held on July 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the ThINCubator, 326 Broad Street, Utica, NY 13501.

JULY 19 - Southern Tier Rural Funding Forum in Watkins Glen

Join the SBA Syracuse District Office and the U.S.D.A. Rural Development for a NY Rural Funding Forum. Representatives and program specialists will be on hand to share information about available programs, as well as discuss application details and deadlines. This is an opportunity for you to be part of the discussion and share your input as these agencies travel the state to listen, learn and assist Southern Tier small businesses with access to capital. The free event will be held on July 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm. at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, 16 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen, NY 14891.
