Each year the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) partners with SBA in hosting a series of community outreach events to educate small businesses about federal contracting and procurement opportunities with HHS and their prime contractors.  This year, HHS hosts four “Getting Back 2 Business” Small Business Outreach Events in Nashville, TN; San Diego, CA; Indianapolis, MN and Washington DC. Similar events in past years helped HHS achieve 22.60% in small business procurement and purchase over $5.5 B products and services from small business in Fiscal Year 2017.

The San Diego event was well received with 415 registrants and over 250 participants for this HHS Outreach event. The event featured key government personnel from HHS and SBA, as well as prime contractors; it also included workshops and matchmaking sessions that opened the doors for small businesses to do business with HHS. SBA's San Diego and Government Contracting staff participated as panelists providing information on SBA programs and services, and provided on-site consultation to the participants as well. In addition, SBA Associate General Counsel for Procurement Law John Klein provided attendees with SBA policy updates pertaining to SBA’s government contracting programs.

Unique fact: San Diego District Office services both San Diego and Imperial Counties. It’s unique service area borders Mexico, and the state of Arizona. It also includes one of the top 10, largest cities in U.S. (San Diego), and agriculture based (rural) service area (Imperial County).

Delivering public service to rural communities demands strategic management, solid partnerships, and open dialogue with community leaders. The SBA San Diego District Office has made a concerted effort to engage the U.S. Department of Agriculture and local leaders for feedback on ways to improve service to our rural, agriculture based, Imperial County. What we heard most often from the community was the need for more consistency. Listed below are five ways consistency is helping us improve our service delivery.

  • allows for measurement
  • creates accountability
  • establishes your reputation
  • makes you relevant
  • maintains your message

We look forward to continuing our efforts to consistently provide useful assistance and SBA program delivery to small businesses in both San Diego and Imperial Counties.
