Region IV Administrator

U.S. Small Business Administration

Thank you to America's Small Business Development Centers for the dedicated work they do day in and day out to build on the success of America's entrepreneurs!

SBDC Day is a national, collective proclamation of the success and impact America’s Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) have across the nation in economic development and the small businesses community. We are celebrating the third Annual SBDC Day today!

SBDC Day unites the nearly 1,000 SBDC centers across the country and the hundreds of thousands of clients they serve by sharing, in real time, the success stories and notable impacts SBDCs collectively have on the small business community at large. In the Southeast Region alone, the SBDC's counseled and trained nearly 70,000 entrepreneurs in FY 2018. THANK YOU SBDC's for what you do for small business!

Women's History Month

Women Entrepreneurs Are Powering the American Dream

By: Ashley D. Bell, Regional Administrator

Why are we celebrating Women’s History Month from a small business perspective? The numbers say it all. The American Express 2018 State of Women-Owned Businesses report, which makes its projections based on data from the most recent U.S. Census Bureau Survey of Business Owners, estimates that there are 12.3 million women-owned businesses. These entities account for 40 percent of all U.S. businesses and generate an estimated $1.8 trillion in revenue, with $386.6 billion in revenue coming from minority women-owned businesses. During Women’s History Month, the SBA salutes female entrepreneurs for pursuing business ownership as part of their own American dream. In my opinion, these numbers are ready for a large uptick, and helps set some goals for our work at the SBA across the Southeast.

This month, I had the pleasure of signing a Strategic Alliance Memorandum between the U.S. Small Business Administration South Florida District Office and the City of Fort Lauderdale Economic and Community Investment Division.  The event marked the beginning of a collaboration that we believe will spur economic development through the support and growth of small business ownership.

In FY-18, the SBA guaranteed more than 3,000 loans to small businesses valued at $1.34B in our 24-county territory south of Orlando.  For the three previous consecutive years, South Florida SBA lending grew $100M annually. I was truly pleased to travel to Broward County and sign this agreement in such a thriving and dynamic marketplace that received nearly 450 SBA guaranteed loans valued at approximately $200M during that same period of time. Broward also leads our District in the number of SBA-guaranteed loans to African-Americans.

Special thanks to Michael Chen, Economic Development Manager, for the City of Fort Lauderdale and Althea Harris from my staff who worked tirelessly to form this collaboration.

Lead SBA Economic Development Specialist Lonnie Koyama also signed a two-year SAM partnership on March 12 with the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Association of Veteran Owned Businesses (SCFAVOB) at the Rising Tide, a small business located in Port Canaveral.

Kentucky Works with City of Louisville to Offer Contracting Events

In conjunction with Louisville Forward, the city’s Economic Development Department, the Kentucky District Office is participating in a three-part Lunch & Learn series on government contracting. The series helps small businesses understand government contracting programs and determine if federal contracts are a viable option.

Session one provides an overview of the prime contracting and subcontracting assistance programs, SBA certification programs, with specific information about the Women-Owned and Veteran-Owned Small Business Programs.

Session two focuses on how the government buys goods and services, the different contract methods and types, and a review of key section of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and how those pertain to small businesses.

Session three addresses how to participate in, and take advantage of, government contracting opportunities by reviewing several foundational steps necessary to be successful in the federal government marketplace.
