6 Steps to Break into Exporting

Research shows businesses who export are 17 percent more profitable than those who don't. Businesses that export also benefit from smoother business cycles, fully utilized production capabilities and overall increased competitiveness.

If you're not exporting yet, here's how to get started:

  1. Get free help from the Washington Export Outreach Team, or your local U.S. Export Assistance Center in Washington or Idaho.
  2. Make your export plan with the assistance of experts at your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Export Center in Washington or Idaho
  3. Meet potential international buyers through programs such as the State Trade Expansion Grant (STEP) in Washington or Idaho.
  4. Choose the most cost effective shipping method based on advice from trusted export experts.
  5. Finance your export program with tools such as the SBA Export Express Loan Program.
  6. Mitigate risk by ensuring you get paid through programs such as the U.S. Export Import (EXIM) Bank Small Business Credit Insurance program.
