Tijuana’s Bar & Grill Leader is SBA’s 2018 Puerto Rico Small Business Person of the Year

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) honored Tijuana’s Bar and Grill founder Alexander Gómez with the Puerto Rico Small Business Person of the Year Award, SBA District Director Yvette T. Collazo announced.

Collazo presented Gómez with his award at the Small Business Week closing ceremonies co-hosted by the Puerto Rico Bankers Association.

"Small Business Week is all about recognizing the great contributions small businesses like Tijuana’s Bar and Grill make to our economy,” said SBA District Director Yvette T. Collazo. “Entrepreneurship takes passion, dedication and commitment, all of which Alexander Gómez has demonstrated throughout the years. The SBA is proud to honor him among the nation’s finest entrepreneurs for 2018.”

SBA Announces Companies Selected for Emerging Leaders Class of 2018 in Puerto Rico

The U. S. Small Business Administration Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands district office has launched its fourth Emerging Leaders training series in San Juan, announcing the  companies selected to participate in the Class of 2018.

“We are very pleased with our participant selection for this year’s Emerging Leaders Training Series in Puerto Rico,” said SBA District Director Yvette T. Collazo during the Kick-off ceremony hosted by the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce at the SBA district office in Hato Rey. “From sustainable energy solutions, legal services, and engineering, to furniture manufacturing, telecommunications, marketing and technology, the companies recruited all have one thing in common: they have reached a level of success and are looking to reach the next stage, and to creating more job opportunities in their communities.”

SBA Conducts Another Successful Annual Matchmaking Event with Colegio de Ingenieros

The SBA Puerto Rico office held another successful Government Contracting Matchmaking Event with the Puerto Rico Engineers and Land Surveyors Association (CIAPR by its Spanish acronym), as part of National Small Business Week celebrations on the island. The 13th matchmaker cosponsored between SBA and CIAPR, nearly 150 small businesses attended the event, and had the opportunity to participate in educational sessions as well as to hold face-to-face meetings with procurement officers from over 10 federal agencies and pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS). New Strategic Alliance

The SBA and the Puerto Rico Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions (OCFI) recently entered a Strategic Alliance to work together in the spirit of cooperation and open communications, with the primary goal of meeting the needs of the small business community on the island. In addition to its mandate as regulator and supervisor of financial institutions in Puerto Rico, the mission of the OCFI is to help families, individuals and small businesses to enhance the control of their finances by means of education and training. PCR Appointed for Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rico office welcomes Jezabel Rodríguez, recently appointed Procurement Center Representative (PCR) for the island, reporting to SBA's Office of Government Contracting, Area 1. As PCR, Jezabel will work to ensure maximum consideration for small businesses in federal contracting. Jezabel began her federal career in 2005 as a Contract Specialist with Defense Logistics Agency - Energy in Fort Belvoir, VA. Prior to joining the federal government, she worked for a logistics company in Cataño, PR.

Virgin Islands Highlights

SBA, UVI, VI-SBDC and Goald Coast Yachts Officials

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center honored Gold Coast Yachts president Richard Difede with the 2018 Virgin Islands Entrepreneur of the Year Award, SBA District Director Yvette T. Collazo and SBDC State Director John Osoinach announced. 

Collazo and Osoinach presented Difede with his award at the Small Business Week Awards Ceremony held at the University of the Virgin Islands in Kingshill, St. Croix.

Founded in 1986, Gold Coast Yachts designs and builds personal and commercial vessels such as sailboats, catamarans and support vessels. To date, the company has been commissioned 124 vessels and currently provides direct employment to approximately 45 people.

The SBA also honored the Resilient Small Business of the Year, St. Thomas-based Tickles Dockside Pub, and its owner Louis Morrissette, for their support and contributions to the community in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. In addition, the SBA bestowed the Lender of the Year Award to Banco Popular de Puerto Rico.

During their tip to the Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands District, Deputy Associate Administrator for Field Operations, Robert Steiner and Region II Regional Administrator, Steven Bulger also visited St. Thomas to meet with business owners, government officials and SBA stakeholders. Regional Administrator Bulger also had the chance to participate on The Morning Show with Addie Ottley, airing live every weekday on WSTA Radio, and talk about SBA efforts and goals for the territory. Federal Reserve Bank of NY - Puerto Rico Small Business Survey

If you are a Puerto Rico small business owner and would like to participate in a survey as part of the New York Fed's Outreach & Education efforts, please click here. The survey will now be open through early June 2018, and the New York Fed plans to release a report on the survey later this year. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma & Maria, the survey will shed light on the current business climate in Puerto Rico.
