Tom Todt

SBA Alabama District Office

Thomas A. Todt, District Director

The wages of wagering is…humiliation.  Given the contestants in the NCAA national championship stakes, it was inevitable that there be a friendly wager between the Alabama and Georgia District offices.  Terri Denison, SBA Georgia District Director, and Rosemarie Drake, SBA Georgia Deputy District Director, proposed that the losers don the team insignia of the victors. A picture is still worth a thousand words. Kudos to Terri and Rosemarie for being good sports, admirable colleagues and superb resources for Georgia small businesses!

2017 South Florida District Accomplishments

Lending - For the THIRD year in a row, our office approved over $1 Billion in SBA loan guarantees. This could only happen with the collaboration of our lender partners and with the staff's efforts to increase the knowledge of SBA financing programs with our small business constituents.

SFL Emerging Leaders

Emerging Leaders - We successfully graduated our 4th and 3rd Emerging Leaders classes from Miami and Tampa, respectively. Interise, our curriculum contractor, has used our Miami site as a model for the program on class member engagement and instructor/facilitator collaboration.

SFL Emerging Leaders Alumni

Emerging Leaders (Alumni) - In addition to being selected as a site model, the District was also one of four nationwide sites offered the opportunity to conduct EL Alumni events this year and we received enthusiastic participation by our cadre of alumni.

Administrator Visits - We were honored to host SBA Administrator Linda McMahon twice last year.

During her inaugural filed visit as the Administrator, McMahon participated in a Freebee ride as part of her first stop to the Florida Small Business Development Center at Florida International University on April 13.

These customized open-air electric cars offer free, short-distance rides in parts of downtown Miami and Miami Beach. The company also received capital-access assistance through SBDC-FIU. https://twitter.com/FloridaSBDCN/status/852593086081499137.

Her next stop included a meeting with local government officials followed by an opportunity to speak with patrons will attending a luncheon at Miami’s Versailles Restaurant with HUD Secretary Ben Carson (left).

McMahon AAA

McMahon also toured AAA Million Auto Parts, a family-owned business originally established in Cuba in 1938 by José R. Hernández. After Hernández passed away in 2005; his daughter, Margarita Hernández, and granddaughter, Cristina, continued on in his footsteps to now offer auto repair services in addition to a selection of rare parts for classic cars from the 1950s and ’60s.

McMahon's visit wrapped with a roundtable discussion with local small businesses followed by a meeting with staff members from the South Florida District.

Disaster Assistance: After weathering Hurricane Irma, the SFDO assisted the Office of Disaster Assistance with their efforts to get the word out about applying for disaster assistance. During the Administrator's visit on Sept. 27, she met with Hurricane Irma survivors and expressed heart-felt gratitude towards those assisting in the recovery efforts.

McMahon disaster Assistance

The Florida Small Business Development Center (SBDC) deployed Mobile Assistance Centers to the Florida Keys in an effort to assist small businesses located in Monroe County recover from Hurricane Irma.  To date, the SBA has approved more than $1B in disaster loans for Florida residents.  Read more.

8(a) Business Development - The SFDO completed over $90 million in 8(a) program acceptance letters for our firms in the District. This translates to contracting dollars and experience for our firms that can be multiplied in their future contracting efforts. Additionally, we welcomed 25 new 8(a) firms to our portfolio in FY-2017.

To kickoff 2018, Regional Administrator Mark Hayward (A) (pictured below) took part in a two-day visit to the South Florida District Office Jan. 8-9. In addition to meeting with individual members of the staff; he participated in a Q&A session during the District’s monthly staff meeting and discussed the transitional stages of the agency’s goals and field alignment plan while relaying the Administrator’s passion and commitment to grow small businesses.
