Four Additional Awards
to Prevent Opioid Misuse Among Women and Girls
As part of the administration’s efforts to
combat the opioid epidemic, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS) Office on Women’s Health (OWH) made four
additional awards to prevent opioid misuse among women and
girls. Like the previous
awards, the four new awards support the primary and/or secondary prevention of
prescription and illegal opioid misuse by women across the lifespan.
The four organizations each receiving awards
of approximately $100,000 are:
Meridian
Behavioral Healthcare Inc., Gainesville, Florida
Erie County of Buffalo, Buffalo, New York
Students Taking a Right Stand (STARS)
Nashville, Nashville, Tennessee
Sentara RMH Medical Center, Harrisonburg,
Virginia

The U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) Seeks Comments
The USPSTF seeks comments on screening for cervical cancer. The Task
Force recommends screening most women 21 to 65 for cervical cancer. The draft recommendation statement and draft evidence review are available for review and public comment until October 9, 2017.

Disease Control and Prevention Updates U.S.
Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (U.S. MEC)
Use of progestin-only injectable contraceptives (including depot
medroxyprogesterone acetate) by women at high risk for HIV has been changed
from a U.S. MEC category 1 (safe for use without restriction) to U.S. MEC category
2 (benefits outweigh theoretical or proven risks). Read the full report.
