February is Black History Month
During Black History Month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will partner with fellow Offices of Minority Health at HHS and healthcare professionals around the nation to focus on highlighting the impacts COVID-19 has on African Americans with underlining health issues such as uncontrolled hypertension.
Did you know that African Americans ages 35-64 years are 50% more likely to have high blood pressure than whites? Learn how together we can work to monitor, control and lower hypertension.

HHS Announces a Special Enrollment Period for Health Coverage
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, HHS has announced a special period for health insurance enrollment of qualified individuals and families in states served by the HealthCare.gov Marketplace. Please note that some states run their own health insurance websites and may or may not make a similar offer. Visit HealthCare.gov to find local help.
The special enrollment period runs February 15-May 15.

Health Observance: American Heart Month
African Americans continue to have high rates of many risk factors for heart disease. During American Heart Month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) The Heart Truth Campaign is spreading the word that all of our hearts are healthier when we make heart health part of our self-care routine. During the campaign's Wellness Wednesday show your heart some love by devoting time to care for yourself. Move more, eat a fruit or veggie you've never tried, make a plan to quit smoking/vaping or schedule bedtime to get seven-eight hours of sleep.

High Blood Pressure in Adults: Guidelines for Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Management
In 2017, the American College of Cardiology (ACC), in partnership with the American Heart Association, published Guidelines for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Management of High Blood Pressure in Adults.

Diabetes and Heart Disease Risk in Blacks
This study, sponsored by the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, seeks healthy African Americans and African-born Blacks, age 18-70 years old. The study will be carried out at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD.
COmmuNity-engaged SimULation Training for Blood Pressure Control (CONSULT-BP Study)
This study, sponsored by the University of Massachusetts, Worcester and the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, seeks early-stage healthcare providers, including residents and nurse practitioner students, to reduce providers' bias, improve communication skills and enhance providers' ability to develop therapeutic alliances with racial and ethnic minority patients. The study will be carried out at five safety net hospitals in Worcester, Barre and Uxbridge, MA.

HRSA Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program covers up to 85% of unpaid nursing education debt for registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses and nurse faculty. If you receive an award, you must work two years in either a Critical Shortage Facility or as nurse faculty at an eligible nursing school.

Call for applications for the 2021 Training Course in Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Epidemiology
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HRSA and CityMatCH are offering a Training Course in MCH Epidemiology as part of their ongoing effort to enhance the analytic capacity of state and local health agencies. The training course is an intensive program that combines lectures, discussion, hands-on exercises and opportunities for individualized technical assistance.
