  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI): Sickle Cell Science: Path to Progress webinar series. Sickle Cell Disease Care in the Emergency Department: Improvement Initiatives and Ongoing Research. Co-sponsored by the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and the American College of Emergency Physicians, the final webinar in this series will highlight current evidence-based best practices and ongoing research designed to improve the care of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the emergency department.

  • HHS/NIH, National Institute on Aging (NIA): Exploratory/Developmental phased award. Tailoring Interventions to Improve Preventive Health Service Use (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required). Supports the development of electronic health record-based interventions to improve quality of care and health outcomes and reduce health disparities.

  • HHS/NIH, NHLBI: Research project / cooperative agreement. New Epidemiology Cohort Studies in Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep Diseases and Disorders (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). Through this funding opportunity, NHLBI aims to establish a new epidemiology cohort of at least 2,000 participants to stimulate research on a wide range of heart, lung, blood and/or sleep research hypotheses.

  • HHS/NIH, NHLBI and the National Center for Advanced of Translational Sciences (NCATS): Exploratory/Developmental phased award / cooperative agreement. Rare Disease Cohorts in Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Disorders (UG3/UH3 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). Supports the study of rare or related rare diseases, disorders, conditions or syndromes together based on pathogenesis, affected biochemical, cellular or physiological features or organ system involvement, including the of study hemoglobin disorders rather than only sickle cell anemia or thalassemia.

  • Spirit of St. Louis Women's Fund: 2019-2020 Grants. Supports health and social services projects within the Greater St. Louis area, which includes the City of St. Louis and/or the counties of St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin in Missouri or St. Clair, Madison and Monroe in Illinois.

  • Robert Wood Johnson FoundationExpanding Cost Conversations Between Patients and Their Providers. Supports research to test emerging best practices for increasing the frequency and quality of conversations about the costs of care, including out-of-pocket costs to patients and attention to indirect costs of receiving treatment, such as child care, time away from work and transportation to medical appointments.

  • Association of American Medical Colleges: Nurturing Experiences for Tomorrow's Community Leaders (NEXT) Award. Provides funding to develop or enhance a learning opportunity for students and trainees that seeks to improve community health and eliminate health disparities.

  • Society for Public Health EducationHelen P. Cleary Scholarship. Provides financial support to students enrolled in a health education related degree program to take the national Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination.

    Involving Sickle Cell Disease, 2000–2016. This HCUP brief presents statistics on inpatient stays among patients with SCD, including historical trends, characteristics of inpatient stays with a principal or secondary diagnosis of SCD, the presence of pain crises, costs, length of stay and 30-day all-cause readmission rates. NIH researchers seek volunteers age 18-70 years old who have received at least one licensed influenza vaccine from 2014 to the present. NIWRC will provide up to 3 days of on-site technical assistance for Tribal domestic violence programs and shelters to build Tribal capacity to respond to domestic violence, strengthen advocacy and improve services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, dating violence and sex trafficking.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The article "CDC Grand Rounds: Improving the Lives of Persons with Sickle Cell Disease", from the journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), illustrates advances in medicine for people living with the blood disorder. It describes interventions that take place such as screening newborns for sickle cell disease as well as treatments that reduce some complications. Additionally, the article acknowledges difficulties both children and adults with the disease face, including lack of access to care, and includes recommendations for improvement.
