When people ask me why they should get tested for HIV, my answer is simple: It’s the only way to know if you have it. Once you know, you can take charge of your future – with or without HIV.

As a doctor, I’ve answered lots of questions from patients who were confused or anxious about HIV and testing. With National HIV Testing Day right around the corner on June 27, I want to answer two common questions about HIV.

Question: Wouldn’t I be able to tell if my partner had HIV?

Answer: No. A person can have HIV and still look and feel healthy. Sometimes it can take 10 years for symptoms to show.

Question: If I get tested and find out I have HIV, is there anything I’ll be able to do to stay healthy?

Answer: Yes! Early treatment can help you live a longer, healthier life.

Find out more about HIV testing at healthfinder.gov. Remember: Take the test to take control.
