English Marine Debris is a problem around the world, and tropical islands are no exception. These island communities often face different challenges, such as limited disposal options, and increased storm activity. Tropical Islands Partnering on Solutions for Marine Debris (TIPS) is a bimonthly online webinar series hosted by the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP). The goal of the TIPS series is to help tropical island communities connect and share perspectives from across the tropics on common marine debris issues and proposed solutions. Each webinar features stakeholders from federal, state, and local government, nongovernmental organizations, academia, and industry to discuss topics about outreach and education, policy, debris management, and successes, as well as overcoming challenges under normal and storm conditions.

Meet the Planning Team
Yaritza Rivera-Torres is the NOAA MDP Caribbean Regional Coordinator for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Her passion for outreach and environmental protection led her to pursue degrees in Microbiology, Education and Biological Oceanography. As a former Sea Grant educator and Biology professor, Yaritza had the opportunity to spread the word on the consequences of marine debris in Puerto Rico’s coasts. Also before joining MDP in 2019, Yaritza was exposed to a wider scope of the problem while working with the state natural resources department on a protocol for addressing abandoned vessels and in the response to 2017 hurricanes.
Mark Manuel is the NOAA MDP Pacific Islands Regional Coordinator for Hawai‘i, American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Prior to joining the MDP in 2015, Mark held various positions with NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center conducting coral reef research throughout the Pacific. As the Center’s Marine Debris Project lead, Mark was given the opportunity to participate and manage large-scale marine debris survey and removal efforts in the remote Papahānaumokuākea Marine National. These amazing opportunities have provided Mark with hands-on marine debris and research experience in some of the most remote locations in the world.
Ashley Hill is the NOAA MDP Florida Regional Coordinator. Before joining the MDP in 2020, Ashley gained a broad range of experience from cataloging Antarctic invertebrates at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum to assessing levels of unreported captures of sea turtles and sawfish at fishing piers in Southwest Florida. Additionally, while walking the same 1-mile stretch of beach every day during sea turtle nesting surveys, Ashley created a photo-series of collected trash, entitled “Turtles, Treasures & Trash, oh my!” to raise awareness of the issue of marine debris to both local residents and visiting tourists.
