Highlights of this edition

  • Geodynamics completed mainscheme acquisition on OPR-Y396-KR-22 Western Lake Michigan! 
  • NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson launch 2904 conducted joint survey operations on OPR-W387-TJ-22 with NRT New London as part of the Detroit field party!

FERDINAND R. HASSLER

OPR-F364-FH-22 Onslow Bay, NC

Recap
  • NOAA Ship Ferdinand R. Hassler  continued survey operations on Onslow Bay. 
  • Closed out data acquisition on sheet H13600.

  • Crew completed bottom samples on sheets H13595 and H13596.
  • Data acquisition on sheet H13597 commenced and it is approximately 50% complete.
  • Sheets H13594, H13595, H13596, and H13600 are 100% complete!

Looking Forward

  • NOAA Ship Ferdinand R. Hassler will continue survey operations on H13597 prior to departing working grounds on 14AUG2022 for the next port call in Charleston, SC.
  • Ferdinand R. Hassler will be pier side for a week of scheduled maintenance before returning to Onslow Bay working ground on 31AUG2022.

OPR-W386-TJ-22 Approaches to Cleveland, OH and OPR-W387-TJ-22 Detroit River 

Recap
  • NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson got underway from Cleveland, OH on 08AUG2022 and began conducting survey operations on OPR-W386-TJ-22, acquiring on sheets H13608, H13610, H13611, H13670, and H13683.

  • TJ launch 2904 conducted joint survey operations on OPR-W387-TJ-22 with NRT New London as part of the Detroit field party.

  • NOAA Ship Fairweather was alongside Marine Operations Center - Pacific (MOC-P) in Newport, OR.

  • NOAA Ship Fairweather will be setting sail to conduct multibeam sonar acquisition on OPR-M328-FA-21 EXPRESS and OPR-O190-FA-22 West Prince of Wales, Alaska!

OPR-T381-RA-22 Mariana Islands

Recap
  • NOAA Ship Rainier has been underway surveying H13576, H13572, H13586, H13584, H13578, and H13582 while conducting dive operations.
  • Rainier came into Guam for a scheduled inport on 11AUG2022.

Looking Forward

  • Rainier will be underway on 16AUG2022 to continue survey on H13571, H13576, H13572, H13573, H13586, H13584, and H13577 while also conducting fishing operations.

OPR-K356-KR-22 Approaches to Calcasieu, LA

Recap

  • Scheduled port call on 07AUG2022.
  • Began acquisition on H13647 on 12AUG2022.
  • Completed H13646 mainscheme and crosslines on 12AUG2022.
  • One partial delay day due to weather.

Looking Forward

  • Continue H13647 mainscheme.
  • Begin fill and investigations in survey areas H13645 and H13646.
  • Scheduled port call for 18AUG2022.

OPR-R320-KR-22 Cape Newenham, AK

Recap

  • All vessels have been demobilized
  • JOA staff completed their first staff observation trip to Togiak and Goodnews Bay. At Togiak, Gauge 2 (radar measuring) was found damaged. The gauge was repaired and started logging data again, but without telemetry. A few days after the visit to Goodnews Bay, it appears that the Gauge 3 was damaged, likely by boat or fishing net. The other 2 gauges continue to operate and the data indicates that they remain stable.

Looking Forward

  • JOA staff will monitor tide stations remotely and prepare for the next staff observation trip at the end of August.
  • On the next staff observation trip, the telemetry will be repaired on Togiak Gauge 2. Goodnews Gauge 3 will also be repaired on the next staff observation trip.
  • Office staff will continue processing and reporting.

OPR-Y396-KR-22 Western Lake Michigan, WI

Recap

  • Early in the week, R/V Benthos and R/V Substantial  worked together in H13638 and completed mainscheme survey for the project. Both vessels continued survey of fill, investigations, and crosslines.
  • The R/V Substantial completed the close out performance test and is on standby for additional fill survey and/or departure.

Looking Forward

  • R/V Benthos will continue fill and investigations in all remaining sheets upon detailed review.
  • R/V Benthos will collect bottom samples and conclude with a close out performance test.
  • The R/V Substantial will be on standby for additional fill survey and/or departure.

OPR-B315-KR-22 Approaches to Newport, RI

Recap

  • All vessels began the week on weather standby and resumed survey operations on Wednesday.
  • M/V Northstar Challenger worked primarily in surveys H13658 and H13661.
  • R/V North Cove transited to surveys H13661 and H13662 to complete fills and shoal areas, and collected the majority of the project grab samples.
  • R/V South Cove continued to survey shoreline areas in H13659 and H13660.

Looking Forward

  • The R/V North Cove and R/V South Cove will continue shoreline area survey operations. 
  • The M/V Northstar Challenger will continue surveying in offshore areas, and will make a port call to resupply on 20AUG2022.

OPR-R302-KR-22 Nunivak, AK

Recap

  • The Qualifier 105 (Q105) with ASV C-Worker 5 (ASV) began the week surveying in H13592.
  • Weather down was experienced on both vessels on 07AUG2022. On 08AUG2022, transit towards Bethel for a rotation began. Weather was fair enough to acquire an additional line through the transit area, F00847.
  • A rotation took place in Bethel on 09AUG2022. The vessel took fuel, supplies, and personnel rotated out.
  • Most of 10AUG2022 was spent in transit back to the survey area, arriving in H13592 late in the day.
  • Resumed survey operations through H13592 and H13593 towards northern Nunivak in an effort to finish remaining work in the northern high priority sheets. H13589 and H13590 were finished on 12AUG2022. H13591 was finished on 13AUG2022.
  • From 12AUG2022 through end of week efforts were concentrated in H13593 to expend remaining LNM. Surveying H13593 at end of week. 

Looking Forward

  • All work is expected to complete this week, weather permitting. Remaining LNM will be utilized in H13593.
  • H13592 has a small amount of work consisting of minor infills, splits, SDB check lines,
    developments, and bottom samples that will be completed prior to leaving the survey area for Bethel.
  • Likely to be beginning transit to Homer by end of week for demobilization.
