Highlights of this edition

  • NOAA Ship Ferdinand Hassler continued Launch 2702 operations in Lookout Bight, got underway to continue surveying OPR-F364-FH-22 Onslow Bay, NC, then returned to Morehead City, NC for scheduled port call.
  • Geodynamics continued hydrographic operations for OPR-Y396-KR-22 Western Lake Michigan, WI, and conducted a site visit on 02AUG2022.

OPR-F364-FH-22 Onslow Bay, NC

Recap
  • NOAA Ship Ferdinand Hassler continued Launch 2702 operations in Lookout Bight.

  • The ship got underway on 03AUG2022 and collected data through 04AUG2022 on H13600, before returning to Morehead City, NC for scheduled port call.

Looking Forward

  • NOAA Ship Ferdinand R. Hassler plans to return to Onslow Bay working grounds on 08AUG2022 to continue surveying H13600 and open a new sheet once mainscheme is completed on H13600.
  • If weather allows for over-the-side operations, collect bottom samples on H13595, H13596, and H13600.
  • Next port call is 15AUG2022 in Charleston, SC.

THOMAS JEFFERSON

OPR-W386-TJ-22 Approaches to Cleveland, OH 

Recap
  • NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson conducted survey operations on OPR-W386-TJ-22, acquiring on sheets H13610, H13611, H13615. The ship arrived for its regularly scheduled inport on 05AUG2022.

OPR-T381-RA-22 Mariana Islands

  • NOAA Ship Rainier got underway from Guam on 04AUG2022.

  •  The ship surveyed H13576 (Rota), H13572 (Saipan), H13586 (Anatahan), H13584 (Sarigan - Zealandia Bank) and H13582 (Agrihan) while conducting dive operations.

Looking Forward

  • NOAA Ship Rainier will be continuing work on H13576 (Rota), H13572 (Saipan), H13573 (Tinian), H13586 (Anatahan), H13584 (Sarigan - Zealandia Bank) while also conducting dive operations.
  • The ship will be pulling into Guam on 11AUG2022 for a scheduled inport to take on stores and fuel.

OPR-Y396-KR-22 Western Lake Michigan, WI

Recap

  • R/V Benthos collected mainscheme multibeam survey data in H13638. 
  • R/V Substantial collected mainscheme multibeam survey data in H13640 and H13638, XLs in H13637, H13640, H13642, and Fill/Investigations/Recovery in H13636 and H13643.
  • Virtual site visit was conducted on 02AUG2022.
  • R/V Substantial had a scheduled port call in Sheboygan for dockside provisioning, crew rotations, and scheduled maintenance.

Looking Forward

  • R/V Benthos will continue the MBES survey in H13638 in the inshore section and will be working out of Manitowoc Marina and then move onto various fill, investigation, and recoveries for the inshore sheets. 
  • The R/V Substantial will continue MBES survey in H13638 and move onto XLs in that sheet and then fill, investigation, and recoveries for the offshore sheets.
  • The R/V Substantial may also begin standby for project closeout / transit preparation.

OPR-B315-KR-22 Approaches to Newport, RI

Recap

  • The past week of surveying had good weather conditions throughout, with no weather delays for any vessel.
  • M/V Northstar Challenger surveyed primarily in H13661 and H13662, and surveyed in H13658 while transiting for port calls.
  • R/V North Cove surveyed in H13657, H13659, and H13660, and R/V South Cove surveyed in H13659 and H13660.
  • The week concluded with all vessels preparing for poor weather conditions beginning 07AUG2022.

Looking Forward

  • Weather conditions at the beginning of the week will keep all vessels in port.
  • Survey operations are expected to resume on 09AUG2022 for the M/V Northstar Challenger and 10AUG2022 for the R/V North Cove and R/V South Cove.

OPR-R302-KR-22 Nunivak, AK

Recap

  • The Qualifier 105 (Q105) and C-Worker 5 ASV (ASV)  began the week surveying in H13590.
  • Operations continued this week primarily off of northern Nunivak in H13589, H13590, and H13591. Effort was made to close out these high priority sheets, including crosslines, SDB checklines, and bottom samples. Pending a final review, H13589 and H13590 should be now be complete, and H13591 requires minimal effort to finish. 
  • Substantial weather down time was observed later in the week between 8/4 and 8/6.
  • Operations moved back to southern Nunivak by the end of the week in preparation for the upcoming rotation in Bethel planned for 8/9. Data collection was occurring in H13592 at the end of week.

Looking Forward

  • A rotation is scheduled in Bethel for 8/9. As a result, the Q105 will be in transit the majority of 8/8 and 8/10. This is the final planned full rotation. 
  • Following the rotation the remaining work in H13591, H13592, and F00847 should be completed this week. Remaining LNM will be expended in H13593.
  • The NUN1 GNSS buoy will be recovered when possible.
  • Survey where weather allows.
