Highlights of this edition

  • NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson continued survey operations on OPR-W386-TJ-22 Approaches to Cleveland, OH.
  • All eTrac's vessels for the OPR-R320-KR-22 Cape Newenham, AK project have been demobilized. This week, JOA field crews departed and completed water level stations installation during the lowest tides in Togiak and Goodnews Bay, AK.

RAINIER

OPR-T381-RA-22 Mariana Islands

Recap
  • NOAA Ship Rainier has been alongside Naval Base Guam due to COVID cases impacting the ship's ability to meet safety manning.

  • While alongside, the ship conducted survey operations on H13574 (Apra Harbor) and conducted dive operations using the ship's outboard boats.
  • Once there were enough staff to go underway, the ship surveyed H13572 (Saipan), H13573 (Tinian), H13571 (Guam), and H13576 (Rota) while conducting dive operations.
  • The ship moored in Saipan for an outreach event and to change out crew.
Looking Forward
  • NOAA Ship Rainier will be getting underway from a Saipan in port on 19JUL2022 to work on H13572 (Saipan) and H13578 (Pagan), H13581 (Asuncion), H13583 (Alamagan), and H13582 (Agrihan) while also conducting dive operations.

Recap

  • Project shut down for COVID19 through 13JUL22.
  • Resumed operations on 14JUL22 with MS in survey area H13645.

OPR-R320-KR-22 Cape Newenham, AK

Recap

  • On 11JUL2022, JOA field crews departed for station installation during the
    lowest tides of the cycle in Togiak and Goodnews Bay, AK.
  • Installation has been completed for both water level stations.
  • Office staff will continue processing and reporting.

OPR-Y396-KR-22 Western Lake Michigan, WI

Recap

  • R/V Benthos collected mainscheme multibeam survey data in H13637 and H13640.
  • R/V Substantial collected mainscheme multibeam survey data in H13642 and H13643 and collected crosslines and recoveries in H13635, H13636, H13641, and H13643.
  • R/V Substantial had a scheduled port call on 16JUL2022 for dockside provisioning and crew rotations.

Looking Forward

  • R/V Benthos will continue the inshore MBES survey in H13637 and perform recoveries and crosslines when the weather permits, then move on to MBES survey in H13640.
  • During a weather window, R/V Benthos will transit to the southern sheets to finish up any remaining recoveries. The R/V Substantial will continue MBES survey in H13642, followed by MBES survey in H13639.

OPR-B315-KR-22 Approaches to Newport, RI

Recap

  • R/V North Cove and R/V South Cove arrived at the survey area on 12JUL2022 and began daylight survey operations on 13JUL morning prioritizing shoreline work as conditions allowed. W
  • eather conditions were good for the remainder of the week.
  • The M/V Northstar Challenger began mobilization on 15JUL and calibrations on 16JUL at the OSI main office.

Looking Forward

  • M/V Northstar Challenger will complete calibrations and will transit to the survey area to begin 24-hour operations, starting in Survey H13658.
  • Forecast conditions are mixed to poor during the week.
  • R/V North Cove and R/V South Cove will continue daylight operations as conditions allow, working primarily in Surveys H13657, H13659 and H13660.

OPR-R302-KR-22 Nunivak, AK

Recap

  • The Qualifier 105 (Q105) and C-Worker 5 ASV (ASV) began the week surveying in H13592 off of southern Nunivak Island. At end of day 10JUL2022, the vessels were surveying through F00847 in preparation for the next scheduled Bethel rotation.
  • 11JUL through 13JUL was spent either in transit to or from Bethel for the rotation, as well as the rotation itself. The rotation went as planned on 12JUL, with a crew transfer, resupply, and resupply accomplished. 
  • Operations resumed in transit back to Nunivak on 14JUL in F00847.
  • The NW Nunivak (NUN1) GNSS buoy was addressed with new solar panels and batteries retrieved during the Bethel rotation. It was re-deployed at the original location on 15JUL and was operating normally at the time of this report.
  • Data was collected in H13593 on 15JUL and 16JUL while enroute to/from redeployment of the NW Nunivak GNSS buoy.
  • At end of day 16JUL data acquisition was active in H13592.

Looking Forward

  • Survey where weather allows. Based on the weather forecast, operations are likely to move to northern Nunivak Island early in the week, and possibly back to southern Nunivak late in the week.
