Highlights of this edition

  • NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson conducted hydrographic operations on OPR-E349-TJ-21, Central Chesapeake Bay, MD.
  • OSI completed data acquisition for OPR-Z394-KR-21 Whitefish Bay, MI, and moves towards project demobilization.

  • Thomas Jefferson collected on OPR-E349-TJ-21, Central Chesapeake, sheet H13509 and opened acquisition on H13510.

Looking Forward

  • Thomas Jefferson will continue acquisition on OPR-E349-TJ-21, Central Chesapeake, H13509 and H13510, before moving to Offshore Chesapeake, OPR-D304-TJ-21, H13424.
  • The ship will dry dock in Norfolk, VA this upcoming winter period.

RAINIER

OPR-P336-RA-21 North Coast of Kodiak Island, AK

Recap
  • Rainier surveyed H13492 and H13493, focusing on H13492 as the highest priority sheet, but being limited at times by weather and swell.

  • Blake acquisition in survey areas H13487 and H13489.
  • Broughton acquisition in survey area H13487.
  • One day down for Broughton side scan repairs.
  • Three weather days in advance of Hurricane Ida.
Looking Forward
  • No survey operations, down for Hurricane Ida.
  • Preparing close out plans for the project. Planning to resume operations later in September.

Recap
  • RV Endeavor was on standby for final fill plans.
  • RV VoxelRV Rapid, and the field office were demobilized.
Looking Forward
  • RV Endeavorwill complete the final fill/investigation plans.
  • Reporting staff will submit DtoN reports, create final feature files, and begin writing the DAPR and DRs.

OPR-K380-KR-21 Port Freeport & Approaches, TX

Recap
  • The MV Atlantic Surveyor continued survey operations on H13504 (Sheet 3) and H13506 (Sheet 5).
  • The Atlantic Surveyor remained at the dock for weather down time for half of 8/22/2021.
  • The Atlantic Surveyor made a routine port call for half of 8/27/2021 and half of 8/28/2021 before resuming survey on 8/28/2021.
Looking Forward
  • The MV Atlantic Surveyor will return to port in Freeport, TX on Sunday 8/29/2021 and secure while Hurricane Ida passes to the east over Louisiana.
  • The Atlantic Surveyor survey operations will continue on H13504 (Sheet 3) and H13506 (Sheet 5) as weather conditions allow.

OPR-Z394-KR-21 Whitefish Bay, MI

 

Recap
  • Survey operations were completed early this past week.
  • The MV Northstar Challenger returned to port and demobilized while the RV H.F. Stout and RV North Cove surveyed for another two days to collect the remaining mainscheme data and investigation items.
Looking Forward
  • Data Processing and Reporting will continue to delivery.

OPR-R340-KR-21 Approaches to Egegik Bay, AK

Recap
  • MBES collection occurred in Sheets H13438, H13441, and H13442.
  • Majority of work remaining in H13438 and H13441 only workable on high tides. 
  • Q105 stayed productive by working mostly in H13442 during foul weather.
  • Sealegs continued survey of Egegik Bay channel route, estimated 2 more days to finish.
  • Crew change in Dillingham on 24AUG2021 successful and on schedule.
  • An active flare was spotted south of Q105 the morning of 28AUG. Survey was briefly suspended, and search efforts began for 3 hours until Coast Guard air support arrived at site to continue search.
  • Q105 surveying splits in sheet B for chart comparison at end of day 28AUG.
Looking Forward
  • Prioritize H13438, and nearshore work (including Egegik Bay) with the Sealegs vessel when weather and tides allow 30AUG-2SEP looking very promising for wrapping up multiple nearshore locations.
  • Estimated 2 more days to finish Egegik Bay channel with Sealegs.
  • Collect bottom samples, infills, splits and crosslines in all surveyed sheets.

S-R364-KR-21 Bering Sea Reconnaissance Survey

Recap
  • SD1033 and SD1067 completed an approximately half-day sensor comparison in the vicinity of weather buoy M2.
  • SD1033 and SD1067 then began transit the area “2” survey that begins north of Nunivak Island. They had not reached the area yet at the time of this report.
  • SD1030 and SD1034 continued survey along route “1b” south of Nunivak Island. They had not finished 1b yet at the time of this report.
  • Unfavorable winds caused vehicles to drift and exit their specified corridors briefly on occasion this week.
  • The USVs were not in close proximity to any whaling communities this week.
Looking Forward
  • SD1033 and SD1067 should complete transit to area “2” and begin survey there.
  • SD1030 and SD1034 should finish route “1b” and transit to area “2” and begin survey.
  • USVs are not scheduled to be in close proximity to any whaling communities next week.
