National Breastfeeding Month: LactMed® Database - Learn How Mother’s Medications Impact Nursing Infants

August 2017 is National Breastfeeding Month, and mothers planning to breastfeed will want to check the LactMed® database from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), especially if they take any medications. Access LactMed here: https://go.usa.gov/xRQzG

LactMed is a database of medications and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed, and each record in LactMed focuses on a specific medication or chemical.  Users can search LactMed to learn about:

  • A summary of how the medication impacts the breastfeeding mother and infant.
  •  Levels of the medication in the milk and blood of the mother and infant.
  • How the medication impacts the infant’s health.
  • Alternate medications to consider (when appropriate).
