Breast Cancer

Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are many risk factors: age, genetics, use of hormone replacement therapy for menopause, use of birth control pills, not having children or having your first child after age 35, and having dense breasts.

Mammogram: Screening and Diagnostic

mammogram is a low-dose x-ray picture of the breast that allows a doctor to have a closer look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. Screening mammograms are done for women who have no symptoms of breast cancer. Diagnostic mammograms are used to check for breast cancer after a lump or other symptom or sign of breast cancer has been found.

Walking for Endurance and Better Health

Brisk walking is great exercise, and like other endurance exercises, it can increase your heart rate and breathing. For some, walking for the recommended 30 minutes a day might be difficult. If so, try walking for 10 minutes at a time and build up to three times a day. As your endurance improves, walk longer until you can advance to a single 30-minute walk. Learn more.

Medicare: An Introduction

Medicare helps with the cost of health care for those over 65. Some people under 65 also qualify if they have certain disabilities. The program has four parts:

  • Part A is hospital insurance
  • Part B helps pay for medical services that Part A doesn't cover
  • Part C is called Medicare Advantage. If you have Parts A and B, you can choose this option to receive all of your health care through a provider organization, like an HMO.
  • Part D is prescription drug coverage. It helps pay for some medicines.
